Norbert Haug, the former head of Mercedes’ motorsport division, is optimistic about Lewis Hamilton’s prospects for reclaiming the elusive eighth Formula 1 title. This title, according to Haug, was unjustly taken from Hamilton in 2021. The championship was contested fiercely throughout the season, but a contentious Safety Car decision affected the outcome.

This year, Hamilton will be donning the iconic red of Ferrari, marking the start of a new chapter in his illustrious career. The British driver, a seven-time World Champion, bid adieu to the Silver Arrows after a 12-year partnership. As the F1 circus gears up for the 24-round calendar, starting in Australia, all eyes will be on Hamilton as he makes his Ferrari debut on the Melbourne streets.

Haug, who played an instrumental role in Hamilton’s rise to fame via the McLaren-Mercedes engine collaboration, confessed to Sky Germany about his sorrow over Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes. The bond between the two extends back to when Hamilton was just 14 years old. Haug’s belief in Hamilton’s potential remains unshaken, despite the years and changes in teams.

The former Mercedes boss dispelled any doubts about Hamilton’s commitment to the sport, especially now that he’s crossed the 40-year mark. He emphasized Hamilton’s competitive spirit, stating that those expecting less effort or drive from the world champion are mistaken. Hamilton’s track record of dedication and performance, Haug believes, will continue at Ferrari. The quest for the eighth title, he insinuates, hinges on the quality of the car Ferrari provides.

However, the 2021 season’s disappointment, which Haug refers to as a ‘stolen title,’ continues to cast a shadow. He elaborated on the adverse impact that season had on the team, leading to numerous setbacks and a decrease in victories. The memory of that season remains a painful one, a stark reminder of the capricious nature of the sport.

As for Mercedes’ prospects in the years to come, particularly in 2025, Haug remains cautiously optimistic. The W16’s performance in the recent Bahrain testing was promising. However, he reminds everyone that a team’s potential is only as good as its performance in the most recent race.

The departure of Lewis Hamilton has undeniably left a void in Mercedes. Yet, as George Russell, the team’s new addition, points out, the focus is on moving forward. Hamilton’s quest for redemption and an eighth title at Ferrari, combined with Mercedes’ efforts to reclaim their dominance, promises an exhilarating F1 season ahead. With this narrative, the world of motorsport is set to provide fans with another electrifying year of racing.
