Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly had a disappointing start to the 2024 season. The Alpine F1 team, much to everyone’s surprise, is currently in last place in the Constructors’ Championship after two races. This has raised concerns from former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan, who believes the current state of the team is embarrassing. He warned that both drivers could leave the team by the end of the year if there are no improvements. Ocon and Gasly are experienced F1 drivers who have already won a Grand Prix, and Jordan believes it’s time for Alpine to start delivering results for them.
The Alpine A524 car is not at the level needed to compete with midfield teams like McLaren and Aston Martin. In fact, the team would be lucky to even compete with Williams, Haas, and the Stake F1 team in the upcoming Australian GP. The current situation is cause for concern, and Jordan’s warning about the possibility of losing both drivers at the end of 2024 highlights the seriousness of the team’s difficulties.
Ocon himself acknowledged the team’s difficulties after the Saudi Arabian GP, admitting that there is no hiding the struggles of the French team in Formula 1. Despite pushing the A524 to the limit, Ocon only managed a 13th place. This indicates that there is a long way to go for the Alpine team to improve their performance.
Looking at the team’s recent history, Alpine finished a respectable fourth in the Constructors’ Championship in 2022, but their performance dropped to sixth place last year. Given the ongoing difficulties and current trend, it is a real possibility that the team could finish in last place in the 2024 season.
