Former Formula 1 champion Villeneuve criticizes Haas F1 team, suggests that Gene should sell to Andretti.

Ex-campeão da Fórmula 1 Villeneuve critica equipe Haas F1, sugere que Gene deveria vender para Andretti.

Michael and Mario Andretti’s attempt to become the 11th team on the grid essentially failed, as the FIA reversed its opinion after nearly causing a conflict between the motorsport governing body and its president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who were in opposition to Liberty Media and the current ten teams.

However, Ben Sulayem’s bark was worse than his bite, as he now closely aligns with his former “enemies,” including F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. What was once an irresistible offer to F1, according to the FIA chief, became an offer they ultimately rejected.

Ben Sulayem’s change of heart included the suggestion that Andretti should buy an existing F1 team. However, currently there are no teams for sale, as their values continue to rise.

With great excitement for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, which takes place on a circuit named after his father, the late legendary F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve, 1997 F1 world champion Jacques expressed his opinion: Currently, there are some teams like Haas that do not contribute anything to F1.

“There is a lack of image. For everyone in the industry, it would be much better to replace Haas with another name. Why introduce an eleventh team when someone could potentially buy Gene’s team and rename it with a more appealing name? If someone buys Haas at an exorbitant price, it would benefit everyone.

“Adding an eleventh team would only dilute the value. There is no need to look further than that. It’s simply business,” Villeneuve explained why Andretti’s offer was rejected, despite the fact that the FIA, as the regulator of F1, has the authority to expand the grid to 12 teams if desired.

The Sauber, also known as Stake F1 Team, will transform into Audi in 2026. The German automaker chose to acquire an existing team to enter the elite of F1 after years of dominance in endurance sports car racing.

The 53-year-old Canadian continued: “Audi invested a significant amount of money to buy Sauber, which added value. Replacing Haas with a well-known brand would be a benefit to the entire paddock.”

F1 teams, led by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, questioned the value that an 11th team would bring to F1. While some believe that the Andretti brand, backed by General Motors, is the key.

But Villeneuve disagrees: Andretti is a renowned name, but alone it is not enough. If they consistently finish last, no one will care who they are. It’s a name from the past in the United States.

“Outside the industry and the United States, no one recognizes it. It’s part of F1 history, but it’s not part of the modern sport. 20-year-old F1 fans probably wouldn’t even know who he is, especially considering that the US already has three Grand Prix races. Adding another American name won’t bring anything,” Villeneuve declared.

During the weekend in Montreal, the Canadian will be working for Sky F1, providing insightful quotes and analysis. He is known for speaking his mind without the influence of rose-colored glasses or political correctness, which is common among commentators.
