Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley has set the F1 world on fire with his bold statement declaring he would “100%” replace George Russell with Max Verstappen at Mercedes. The rumor mill has been churning out speculation about a potential split between the four-time champion and Red Bull due to ongoing performance struggles, compounded by key personnel changes and Honda’s impending departure.

Despite Verstappen being contracted to Red Bull until 2028, the tantalizing prospect of him joining Mercedes continues to tantalize fans and experts alike. Smedley, speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, left no room for doubt when he expressed his preference for the Dutch driver over Russell, praising Verstappen’s exceptional talent to push the car beyond its limits.

Meanwhile, former F1 champion Damon Hill added fuel to the fire by suggesting that some time off could benefit Verstappen, allowing him to assess the competitive landscape post the implementation of new regulations. With uncertainties looming over Red Bull’s ability to meet performance clauses in Verstappen’s contract, the young driver may indeed have pivotal decisions to make regarding his future in the sport.

Despite Red Bull’s recent struggles, Max Verstappen continues to hold his ground, currently sitting third in the championship standings behind the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. As the F1 drama unfolds, all eyes remain on the potential blockbuster driver swap that could reshape the landscape of the sport.
