It was only two years ago that Felipe Drugovich was dominating in the main Formula 1 development series. It was only a month ago that he celebrated his 24th birthday. However, the reality of F1 does not allow the word ‘only’ in any of these statements.
After an unprecedented period of driver stability between 2023 and 2024, F1 is about to have at least two rookie drivers on the grid next year, and possibly more. But it would be highly unlikely for Drugovich to secure a seat – even though his name occasionally appears in silly season rumors, as if he were a remnant of past silly seasons.
Drugovich, an experienced Formula 2 champion, has not yet received the opportunity he hoped for in F1. When I spoke to him at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, where he was participating in a Formula E rookie test, he did not express resentment about his situation. He acknowledged that there are opportunities, but emphasized the importance of being in the right place at the right time.
Support for Drugovich’s belief that his journey in F1 is not over can be easily found. Shortly after winning the F2 title in 2022, Nyck de Vries – himself a former F2 champion – made his long-awaited F1 debut, which boosted his value in the driver market.
The rest of De Vries’ F1 story did not unfold as he had hoped, and his path to F1 was not clear. However, his experience showed Drugovich that it is theoretically possible to reach F1. Drugovich positioned himself behind the scenes of F1, serving as a reserve and simulator driver for Aston Martin.
Drugovich appears at most races and participates in simulator work before each race. He has also had numerous opportunities to drive in FP1 sessions. Last year, he was close to making his F1 debut, but Lance Stroll’s injury prevented him from doing so.
Despite the setbacks, Drugovich remains optimistic. He believes that Aston Martin has given him valuable opportunities and is grateful for the tests and FP1 sessions in which he has been able to participate. He acknowledges the uncertainty of F1 and the difficulty of securing a seat even after winning F2.
Drugovich agrees that teams are now less inclined to choose young drivers over experienced ones, given the extended careers of F1 drivers and limited testing opportunities. He believes that the lack of available seats in F1 is a problem that needs to be addressed.
While more tests would be beneficial, Drugovich does not believe it is the main issue. He emphasizes that teams now have budgets and drivers are staying in F1 for longer, resulting in fewer available seats. The combination of these factors makes it challenging for young drivers to enter F1.
Drugovich’s situation is different from that of Theo Pourchaire, the current F2 champion, who has not received any opportunities in F1. Drugovich is still focused on F1 and believes he needs to continue fighting for his goal. He acknowledges that he has had opportunities to drive for top teams in other categories but felt it was important to remain committed to F1.
While some may argue that Drugovich should give up on F1, he is determined to continue pursuing his dream. He understands the commitment and dedication required to reach F1 and is not willing to give up easily. He is happy with his current racing opportunities and remains hopeful for his future in F1.
The attitude of Drugovich can be seen as idealistic, but he is also realistic. He knows that he is not the first in line for a place in F1, but believes that he can prove his worth and convince someone to give him a chance. If an opportunity in F1 never materializes, he is open to exploring other racing options and making a living from his passion.
