In a shocking turn of events, Niels Wittich, the now-former Formula 1 race director, was asked to relinquish his role abruptly ahead of the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Niels Wittich’s ascent to the role of Formula 1 race director in 2022 was a notable one, after Michael Masi exited the position following a contentious call at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Initially sharing the role with Eduardo Freitas, Wittich eventually emerged as the sole race director.

The unexpected departure of Wittich was not the only personnel shake-up at the FIA. Former racer and pundit Johnny Herbert was also let go from his role as an FIA steward soon after the 2024 season ended. Like Wittich, Herbert too was taken aback by the sudden decision.
