Ex-F1 Race Director Niels Wittich Discusses Surprise Exit from FIA: A First Public Statement

In a shocking turn of events, Niels Wittich, the now-former Formula 1 race director, was asked to relinquish his role abruptly ahead of the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Speculations were rife about the suddenness and nature of this departure, raising questions from all corners of the global racing community. Breaking his silence on the matter, Wittich has now shared his side of the story.

Niels Wittich’s ascent to the role of Formula 1 race director in 2022 was a notable one, after Michael Masi exited the position following a contentious call at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Initially sharing the role with Eduardo Freitas, Wittich eventually emerged as the sole race director.

However, his abrupt departure before the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix sparked widespread intrigue. Was it a mutual decision between Wittich and the FIA, or was he unceremoniously dismissed? Wittich’s recent remarks suggest the latter.

Joining as a guest commentator for Sky Germany during the Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain, Wittich voiced his confusion over the unexpected termination. “I saw no indications that anything wasn’t working or that there was any reason to make a personnel change,” he said, adding that the decision was a “complete surprise”.

According to Wittich, the reasons behind his dismissal remain shrouded in mystery. The FIA has given no formal explanation for his departure, which occurred at a critical juncture in the 2024 championship hunt.

FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, responded to drivers’ concerns in a rather dismissive manner, stating “it’s none of their business” in an interview with Motorsport.com.

Further expressing his bafflement, Wittich revealed that his attempts to understand the grounds of his dismissal have been met with absolute silence. “To this day, no reason has been given to me,” he stated, adding that his last interaction with the FIA president dates back to the previous year in China, and there was no falling out or negative relationship.

The unexpected departure of Wittich was not the only personnel shake-up at the FIA. Former racer and pundit Johnny Herbert was also let go from his role as an FIA steward soon after the 2024 season ended. Like Wittich, Herbert too was taken aback by the sudden decision.

The mystery surrounding these high-profile departures continues to linger, raising eyebrows and fueling speculation in the international motor racing fraternity. As we wait for any official explanation from the FIA, the racing world can only speculate about the real reasons behind these abrupt dismissals.
