Sports car brands do not hold back in showcasing the performance of their models on the track, and Ford, like other manufacturers, recently took the Mustang GTD to the German Nürburgring circuit for a time trial.
In the end, the Mustang GTD completed a lap of the 20.7 km German track in under seven minutes, becoming the first American production model to break the “barrier” of 7 minutes, clocking a time of 6m57.685s.
The achievement was accomplished by driver Dirk Müller, and to celebrate the feat, Ford released a video showcasing all the work leading up to the lap in which the Mustang GTD set its benchmark time.
The time achieved by the Mustang is just two seconds faster than the lap set by the current Porsche 911 GT3, a sports car with 502 hp, which pales in comparison to the 826 hp of the Mustang GTD.
Ford is confident that the Mustang GTD can be faster on the Nürburgring circuit and promises to return in 2025 for another attempt at a record lap.
“We are proud to be the first North American brand with a model that can complete a lap at Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we are not satisfied”, said Ford CEO Jim Farley in a statement. “We know there is much more time to be found with the Mustang GTD. And for that reason, we will be back.”
It is worth noting that the Mustang GTD is a true “beast” on the asphalt, equipped with a supercharged 5.3-liter V8 engine that produces 826 hp and 900 Nm of maximum torque, making this GTD the most powerful production Mustang ever.
All the power is sent from the engine to the rear wheels through a carbon fiber driveshaft connected to an 8-speed rear transmission for an almost 50/50 weight distribution between the front and rear.
