Ford Bronco Recall: 149,449 SUVs at Risk as Rear Shock Absorbers Could Fall Off—No Fix Yet

Ford has issued a massive recall affecting 149,449 Broncos from model years 2021 through 2024 due to a serious defect with the rear shock absorbers—and the worst part? There’s no fix yet.

What’s the Problem?

According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem stems from corrosion on long-flange rear shock absorbers. Over time, the corrosion can create excess pressure on the components, leading to excessive wear and eventual detachment of the external reservoir tube.

Why Is This Dangerous?

  • Detached parts flying off moving vehicles can be a major road hazard for both the driver and others.
  • Loss of shock absorbers can severely impact handling and ride stability, increasing the risk of accidents.

Which Ford Broncos Are Affected?

This recall covers all Bronco body styles, but specifically impacts:

  • Badlands trim models with Capable Suspension
  • Sasquatch-equipped Broncos
  • Models using long-flange rear shock absorbers

Ford made a switch to short-flange assemblies in May 2024 (Badlands trim) and July 2024 (Sasquatch models), meaning newer models should not have this issue.

How Did Ford Discover the Issue?

  • October 2024: NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigation alerted Ford to potential failures in long-flange assemblies.
  • 551 warranty claims, two customer complaints, and one field report have been documented.
  • No known accidents or injuries have been reported related to this defect.

No Fix Available Yet

Ford has acknowledged the defect but has not yet developed a fix. In their recall notice, they state that “a remedy is under development.”

What Should Bronco Owners Do?

Unfortunately, Ford hasn’t provided any recommended actions yet. However:
✔️ Owners should be extra cautious and listen for unusual noises or feel for ride instability.
✔️ Dealers have been notified, but customer notifications won’t begin until February 3.
✔️ If you own an affected Bronco, expect further instructions once Ford finalizes a solution.

How to Check If Your Vehicle Is Affected

If you own a 2021-2024 Ford Bronco, you can:
🔎 Visit the NHTSA recall website (www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) and enter your VIN.
📞 Call Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332.
🏢 Contact your local Ford dealer for updates.

A Growing List of Ford Recalls

This Bronco shock absorber issue joins a long list of Ford recalls, including:
🔴 272,000 vehicles recalled for faulty 12-volt batteries—again.
🔴 Ford ending 2024 with a major recall for diesel trucks.

🚨 Bottom Line: Ford Bronco owners should stay alert for recall updates, as detached shock components could pose serious risks on the road. While Ford works on a solution, drivers should be extra cautious and proactive in monitoring their vehicle’s suspension.
