Flavio Briatore’s Bold Move: Could Franco Colapinto Secure His Spot at Alpine?

In a dramatic twist for the Alpine F1 team, team principal Flavio Briatore is contemplating a surprising decision that could reshape the driver lineup for the upcoming season. With the ink barely dry on Pierre Gasly’s extension—celebrated five years after his historic win—eyes are now turning to the young Argentine driver, Franco Colapinto. Is he on the brink of a major career breakthrough, or will uncertainty cloud his future in Formula 1?

Initially signed for just five races to fill in for Jack Doohan, Colapinto’s contract status has become shrouded in mystery since the Silverstone Grand Prix. As fans and analysts alike speculate about his future, Briatore has hinted at a potential extension, a move that could solidify the team’s strategy for stability in 2026. “The renewal of Gasly is crucial for the team, as he’s one of the best drivers on the grid and a cornerstone of our project,” Briatore stated in a recent interview with AFP. “The second driver? The team needs stability, and keeping both drivers for next year is part of that stability.”

This revelation comes at a critical juncture for Alpine, especially with the impending switch to a Mercedes engine, which insiders are touting as the best power unit available for the 2026 season. “We will have an engine like the others, which means no more excuses,” Briatore asserted, emphasizing that the team will finally possess the tools necessary to compete at the highest levels.

However, he lamented the limitations imposed by their current engine, which has left them fighting for survival in a tightly packed grid where mere tenths of a second can mean the difference between a top-six finish or plummeting to the back of the pack. “Our current motor is a significant handicap,” he admitted, underscoring the urgency to solve these challenges.

With financial backing from Renault and robust sponsorship support, Alpine looks poised to leverage its resources effectively. “We have everything we need to succeed next year, and we must deliver,” Briatore declared with unyielding confidence. “There’s potential for podium finishes, and even a top-four spot if everything aligns perfectly. I didn’t return to be a tourist.”

As the F1 world holds its breath, the fate of Colapinto hangs in the balance. Will he rise to the occasion and secure a permanent role alongside Gasly, or will uncertainty overshadow his promising talent? One thing is for sure: the stakes are higher than ever, and the unfolding drama at Alpine is set to captivate fans and pundits alike in the months ahead.
