Flavio Briatore Hints at Uncertainty for Jack Doohan’s Alpine Future: Mid-Season Shakeup on the Cards?

Alpine Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore has stirred the pot ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season, refusing to rule out a potential driver change during the campaign. With Jack Doohan set to partner Pierre Gasly for the French team, Briatore’s comments have raised eyebrows about the Australian rookie’s long-term prospects in the cutthroat world of F1.

“The Only Certain Thing Is Death”

Briatore’s candid remarks to Le Parisien left no guarantees for Doohan’s security beyond the start of the season.

“We start the year with Pierre and Jack, I guarantee it. After that, we’ll see during the season,” Briatore stated ominously. “The driver is the one who has to finish the work of the almost one thousand people behind him. If there is a driver who is not making progress, who is not bringing results, he will be changed.”

This blunt ultimatum adds pressure to Doohan, who faces his first full F1 season in 2025 after debuting at the 2024 finale in Abu Dhabi.

Gasly’s Stability vs. Doohan’s Challenge

Gasly’s solid performance in 2024, helping Alpine secure sixth in the Constructors’ standings, suggests Briatore’s warning is likely aimed at Doohan. With Gasly proving his worth, the rookie’s ability to adapt quickly and deliver results will be closely scrutinized.

Briatore’s reputation for ruthless decision-making looms large over Doohan’s future. If the Australian struggles, Alpine’s advisor is unlikely to hesitate in making a change.

The Backup Plan: Colapinto and Beyond

Rumors have been swirling about Briatore’s interest in Franco Colapinto, the young Argentinian who impressed during a nine-race stint with Williams in 2024. While Colapinto didn’t replace Doohan for the 2025 season, Briatore hasn’t ruled him out for the future.

“I’m interested in any driver who is fast. Colapinto surprised everyone,” Briatore told Auto Motor und Sport. However, he emphasized that Alpine’s current roster—Gasly, Doohan, and reserve driver Paul Aron—remains intact for now.

Alpine also has Aron, a Formula 2 race winner, as a cost-effective option if a mid-season switch is deemed necessary. Colapinto, though more expensive due to potential buyout costs, remains a tantalizing prospect for the team’s long-term strategy.

The Bigger Picture: 2026 and Beyond

Looking ahead, Briatore hinted at the opportunity to consider Colapinto for 2026, when Alpine may reevaluate its lineup entirely. By waiting until the end of 2025, Alpine would have more flexibility to explore a wider pool of drivers, including Yuki Tsunoda, Valtteri Bottas, and Sergio Perez—all of whom might be seeking new opportunities in F1.

Doohan’s High-Stakes Season

For Jack Doohan, 2025 is shaping up to be a make-or-break year. Briatore’s no-nonsense approach means every race, every point, and every qualifying session will be under the microscope. The rookie will need to prove that he can handle the relentless pressure of Formula 1—and deliver results worthy of the Alpine seat.
