He is a driver I deeply admire. Having competed against him, I am well aware of his remarkable speed and vast experience. It will be a pleasure to witness his presence at Ferrari.
“With his record seven championships, Lewis, alongside Michael Schumacher, is among the best drivers we have ever seen. The fact that he is still actively racing makes it even more exciting to see him on the track, wearing the iconic colors of Ferrari.
“Hamilton and Leclerc, without a doubt, are among the best drivers in the sport. Both possess immense strength and an unwavering desire to emerge victorious. I am confident that they will collaborate harmoniously, without complications, and it will be a spectacle to witness their intense battle for the championship and for victories,” Fisichella ventured.
Mercedes faces a daunting task as they prepare to fill the void left by Hamilton at the end of this season. Speculation about young talent Kimi Antonelli dominates discussions in the paddock, representing a significant risk for a team that is currently struggling to secure wins in the championship. With little optimism on the horizon, it is safe to say that the situation looks bleak.
The decision to guide a rookie while Russell takes over the team may seem reckless. However, with Toto Wolff making the decisions, anything is possible. The possibilities range from a possible return of Sebastian Vettel to Esteban Ocon being given the opportunity to shine.
According to Fisichella, Mercedes has an ideal candidate in mind: “Carlos Sainz is performing exceptionally well. He has shown strength, focus, and consistency in races. He consistently brings the car to the finish line and maximizes his potential in terms of points. His victory in Australia was remarkable, and although he is in negotiations with some teams, Mercedes would be the best choice for him.
“There is a chance he could join Red Bull, but being Max Verstappen’s partner could be a challenge. At Mercedes, he would be George Russell’s partner, who is not only a talented driver but also a great person. Together, I believe they can achieve great things.
“I also heard that he is considering talks with Audi, a team with a promising future due to their extensive facilities. If I were Carlos Sainz, I would choose Mercedes. However, I am unsure about Carlos’s level of interest in joining them given his current situation.”
Turning our attention to Red Bull, with Sergio Perez constantly overshadowed by Max Verstappen, Fisichella predicts a bright future for Yuki Tsunoda, the VCARB driver who has shown significant improvement in all aspects: “There is a possibility of Tsunoda joining the main team in two years.
“We already knew about his speed, but in the past, he was quite inconsistent, making numerous mistakes. However, this year, he has been exceptionally well. Despite not having the best car, he consistently scores points. He has the potential to surpass Daniel Ricciardo, who is also a fantastic driver. I was impressed by his performance this season.
“It is conceivable that he could move to Red Bull, but that depends on what happens with Sergio Perez. The team may choose to bring Sainz on board. However, considering Tsunoda’s young age, he could spend another year at Red Bull before making the switch.”
Indeed, Red Bull currently finds itself with Verstappen carrying the team’s hopes at the front, while Perez lags far behind. There are whispers in the Monaco paddock suggesting that patience is running thin at Red Bull, with Sainz and Tsunoda being considered as potential partners for Verstappen.
Fisichella, now 51 years old, had the privilege of living his dream and driving for Ferrari in Formula 1, although only in the last five races of his career.
