The world’s first 100% electric hydrofoil ferry is ready to return to the waters of Stockholm, Sweden, after a brief winter break.
The Candela P-12 is the world’s first passenger ferry that combines electric propulsion with hydrofoil technology, allowing this vessel to literally fly above the water’s surface – with lower energy consumption and higher speeds.
The first unit of the Candela P-12, named “Nova,” was operational in Stockholm’s public transport system during the fall and is now back, starting April 15, after the break caused by the winter ice season.

The Candela P-12 emits 95% less CO2 compared to conventional ships operating on the same route. At the same time, statistics show that the electric vessel is very popular and faster than a car to the bus, ensuring that its trips are always packed with passengers.

It should be noted that the 100% electric hydrofoil can travel at 25 knots (46 km/h) and has a range of over 2 hours at 20 knots (37 km/h) speed. The ferry also features fast charging, capable of recharging the battery in just one hour.
“One of our goals is to show that with fast and comfortable water transport, we can encourage car passengers to switch to water transport”, said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela. “It is important to demonstrate that the technology used in the ‘Nova’ is suitable for the demanding use of public transport. This is the third generation of our foiling technology, and with the lessons learned from producing over 100 leisure vessels, we are scaling up production to meet demand”, concluded Gustav Hasselskog.
