Indy 500 Open Test: McLaughlin and Palou Dominate the Speed Charts

Indianapolis witnessed a thrilling conclusion to the Indianapolis 500 Open Test as Scott McLaughlin and Alex Palou blitzed their way to the top of the speed charts, leaving fans and competitors in awe of their performance.

McLaughlin, last year’s Indy 500 pole winner, set the track on fire during the morning session with a scorching lap of 232.686 mph in the No. 3 Pennzoil Team Penske Chevrolet. His dominance was evident as he maneuvered through the oval with precision and speed, showcasing his prowess behind the wheel.

Palou, the reigning NTT IndyCar Series champion, proved his mettle in the afternoon session by topping the speed charts with a lap of 223.993 mph in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. His determination to push the limits and fine-tune his car for race day was evident as he navigated the track with skill and expertise.

The day was not without its share of thrills and spills, with two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato experiencing a heart-stopping moment when his car made heavy contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 1. The risks of competing at high speeds in low-downforce setups were on full display, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers that come with the pursuit of glory on the track.

As the action unfolded, drivers like Will Power, Felix Rosenqvist, and Josef Newgarden also made their mark on the speed charts, showcasing their talent and determination to succeed in one of the most prestigious races in motorsport.

With a total of 34 cars on track and over 5,800 laps completed over two days of testing, the stage is set for an exhilarating Indianapolis 500 on May 25. The competition is fierce, the stakes are high, and the drivers are ready to put it all on the line for a shot at victory on race day.

As the countdown to the 109th Indianapolis 500 continues, one thing is clear – McLaughlin, Palou, and the rest of the field are prepared to leave it all on the track in pursuit of glory and immortality at the greatest spectacle in racing.
