Filling the tires with nitrogen: all the pros and cons

Encher os pneus com nitrogénio: todos os prós e contras

Nitrogen is really an alternative to consider for your car tires, what are its advantages and disadvantages? Is there a danger of bursting?

According to the expert technicians at Euromaster workshops, it is necessary to know that nitrogen contains a very high concentration of nitrogen. This nitrogen prevents oxidation, as it is a dry element, unlike air (a mixture of water and oxygen). Therefore, the edge of the tire that touches the rim remains “clean”, causing the tire to lose less pressure.

In the case of compressed air, when it heats up with driving, there is heating and evaporation of water, which leads to an increase in pressure. And here begins the list of differences between the two solutions: Compressed air vs. Nitrogen.

According to the experts, “although possible, it is not recommended to mix compressed air with nitrogen”.

This is because if we think that “compressed air, due to the concentration of oxygen, enhances the oxidation of the tire rubber, with the pressure stipulated by the manufacturer and normal tire use,” nitrogen presents advantages: first, they prolong not only the tire’s lifespan (fewer tires to recycle or dispose of); second, less fuel consumption, fewer emissions of harmful gases; third, less wear and tear and less consumption, greater savings; fourth, driving is “lighter”, quieter, therefore more comfortable.

“The price of tire filling depends on various aspects, such as the type of wheel, type of rim, type of vehicle, dimensions, and specifications of each tire. But prices range, on average, from 5 to 10 euros per filling of a wheel with a normal rim. In the case of, for example, an 18″ or 20″ wheel/rims, the price can go up to 12 euros. But the best thing is to consult price lists and request quotes directly from the store or workshop,” explains Euromaster, which also addresses the myth that nitrogen-filled tires can explode. According to that company, this statement is a myth.

Sometimes, under special circumstances, which may or may not include wear and tear, a tire may “explode” (burst). In fact, the fact that the tire has been filled with nitrogen instead of compressed air increases its lifespan. It is more resistant to temperature and pressure changes, making it more reliable. In addition, nitrogen (nitrogen) is an inert gas, that is, non-flammable.”
