FIA’s shocking crackdown: protest fees explode from 2,000 to 20,000 euros in F1 drama

FIA’S SHOCKING NEW RULES: PROTEST DEPOSITS SKYROCKET TO €20,000!

In a jaw-dropping move that has sent shockwaves through the world of motorsport, the FIA has announced a staggering tenfold increase in the financial barrier for teams wishing to contest steward decisions. The new deposit for lodging a protest has skyrocketed from a mere €2,000 to a mind-blowing €20,000, a clear message aimed at curtailing frivolous complaints that lack substantial evidence. This bold initiative is designed to dissuade teams from using protests as mere tools to stir controversy and cast suspicion on their rivals.

The implications of this drastic shift are monumental. Teams will now only see their hefty deposits refunded if they win their cases, effectively putting their wallets on the line. Furthermore, a non-refundable administrative fee of €5,000 will be required for all protests lodged by Formula 1 teams, power unit constructors, or drivers. For those outside these categories, the stakes are still high, with a €6,000 deposit and a €1,000 administrative fee.

This firm stance by the FIA echoes the sentiments expressed earlier this season by Mercedes driver George Russell and McLaren CEO Zak Brown, who called for heightened financial accountability to deter baseless claims. Both Russell and Brown specifically targeted Red Bull, which has been embroiled in a series of protests that many deemed questionable and ultimately resulted in nothing.

But this isn’t just about money—it’s about integrity in the sport. The FIA’s new rules not only address the immediate financial implications but also aim to preserve the sanctity of racing. With the new deposit structure extending to appeals and review rights, it’s clear that the governing body is serious about putting an end to what they consider reckless behavior.

As the 2025 season unfolds, only time will tell how this aggressive new policy affects team dynamics and the frequency of protests in F1. Will teams think twice before questioning steward decisions, or will this simply ignite a new wave of strategic protests? One thing is certain: the financial stakes have never been higher, and the eyes of the motorsport world are firmly fixed on the consequences of this bold FIA initiative. Buckle up, because the racing landscape is about to get a whole lot more intense!
