FIA SHOCKER: $550 MILLION WRC SALE IN THE WORKS AS NEW COMMERCIAL RIGHTS HOLDER SOUGHT!

In a dramatic turn of events, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has unveiled plans to launch a tender process aimed at securing a new commercial rights holder for the World Rally Championship (WRC). This ambitious move comes as the FIA gears up to collaborate closely with existing rights holders Red Bull and KW25, along with financial powerhouse JP Morgan, to facilitate a sale that could fetch a staggering $550 million!

The clock is ticking as Red Bull and KW25, a prominent German investment firm, have been in discussions for the past year exploring the potential sale of WRC Promoter GmbH. Recent reports have revealed that these rights holders are already in talks with interested buyers, including the renowned private equity firm EQT, as well as various potential investors from Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. With a valuation reaching approximately $550 million (€500 million), the stakes couldn’t be higher!

The FIA has officially confirmed its commitment to finding a new commercial rights holder by stating, “This follows an extensive period of discussions with Red Bull and KW25, who have decided to commence the process.” The FIA is fully aware of the WRC’s surging popularity, boasting a staggering cumulative television audience of 1.3 billion and over 4 million on-site attendees in 2024 alone! Notably, nearly half of these passionate fans are aged between 18-34, presenting an immense opportunity for future growth.

As the thrilling Rally del Paraguay makes its debut on August 28, fans are on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating what the future holds for the championship. The FIA emphasizes that their priority is to ensure the WRC maximizes its potential while delivering unparalleled value to drivers, teams, manufacturers, and, of course, its enthusiastic fanbase.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, expressed his enthusiasm for the WRC’s promising future, stating, “The FIA World Rally Championship is at an exciting moment in its history. Millions of fans around the world are following the action, and new, younger audiences are driving its global growth.” He added, “This process is an important step and will shape the long-term vision for the WRC.”

Malcolm Wilson, founder of the M-Sport team and FIA Deputy President for Sport, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the WRC is not only the longest-running motorsport series but also one of the most exhilarating competitions globally. “The tender process for the commercial rights holder is a big opportunity for a new enterprise to take the Championship into its next chapter with renewed energy and investment,” Wilson declared.

As the battle for the championship heats up, Toyota driver Elfyn Evans currently leads the standings, holding a narrow three-point advantage over his teammate, two-time champion Kalle Rovanpera. Meanwhile, the legendary eight-time champion Sebastien Ogier is on a mission to catch up, committed to participating in all remaining rounds to chase down the all-time record of nine titles held by Sebastien Loeb.

The FIA’s bold strategy to revamp the WRC and the potential sale of its commercial rights marks a pivotal moment in motorsport history. Will a new powerhouse emerge to take the WRC to exhilarating new heights? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain — the world will be watching!
