The FIA rejected McLaren’s objection to Piastri’s track limits violation. The FIA deemed McLaren’s challenge against Oscar Piastri’s track limits breach during qualifying for the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix inadmissible. Piastri’s final lap in Q3 was invalidated due to exceeding track limits at Turn 6, which the Australian driver criticized as “embarrassing,” considering the presence of ineffective gravel areas due to the decision. Instead, the light blue line that marks the edge of the asphalt and the kerbs was used, resulting in Piastri dropping to seventh place in Saturday’s qualifying session. McLaren decided to challenge the decision by submitting a protest to the FIA. Team principal Andrea Stella argued that the evidence presented did not meet the standard of “beyond reasonable doubt.” Stella highlighted that the images used to make the decision were unclear due to shadows, stating, “It’s hard to discern anything in this case; everything is blurred and influenced by shadows.” Stella emphasized the need for the penalty to be applied with absolute certainty, especially when the consequences are severe, such as having the lap invalidated. However, despite McLaren’s protest, the FIA decided not to overturn its decision, meaning Piastri will start the race in seventh on the grid. The FIA explained that the protest, which was submitted in writing along with a €2000 deposit, did not meet the required criteria as it did not specify the relevant regulations or the party against whom the protest was lodged. These omissions violated the FIA’s guidelines for the admissibility of a protest. Furthermore, since the exclusion of the lap time was a decision made by the Stewards of the Meeting, it was not eligible for protest under Article 12.3.3 of the FIA International Sporting Code. Consequently, Piastri will have to start Sunday’s race from seventh place, and McLaren will also forfeit their protest deposit.
