FIA explains non-penalty for Norris’ early start at the Saudi Arabian GP.

FIA explica não penalização por largada antecipada de Norris no GP da Arábia Saudita

Lando Norris, British driver of McLaren, was involved in a controversial incident during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Despite visibly moving before his starting position, Norris was not penalized for a jump start. The FIA stewards, in charge of race supervision, reviewed various data and video footage before making their decision. Although it appeared Norris had moved before the start signal, the transponder installed in his car did not indicate a jump start. According to Article 48.1 a) of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, the transponder reading is the determining factor for assessing a jump start. As a result, no further action was taken against Norris. After the race, Norris expressed confusion about his mistake, stating he had never been in a similar situation before. He attributed his actions to pure instinct and the high number of lights on the track.

“I’m not sure if I witnessed something and my body instinctively responded to it.

“But with the adrenaline rushing, you react to anything that comes your way.

“If I saw something happen or noticed another signal, I acted based on that.

“But I managed to stop and there have been numerous occasions where people stopped without any penalty.”

Norris ended up turning a sixth-place starting position into an eighth-place finish.

Opting to stay out on track during the initial Safety Car period and briefly leading the race, the McLaren driver had to make a mandatory pit stop for a short stint on soft tires.

However, after rejoining the race in eighth place, the advantage gained with the softer Pirelli tires quickly diminished, preventing him from making further progress.

However, Norris was pleased with his team’s strategic gamble, acknowledging that there were occasions in the past when McLaren was not “bold enough.”

“We wanted to try something unconventional rather than playing it safe,” he explained.

“We could have gained a significant number of points or we could have lost some. In the end, we lost some, but that’s just how things go sometimes.

“It was a gamble that was worth taking and I believe it was the right decision to make.

“Sometimes, I feel like we play it too safe, so it’s refreshing to be bolder and explore different approaches. I am content with our choice.

“It may not have been the best or the right one in hindsight. But I am satisfied with how we executed our plan.”
