FIA Deputy President Resigns Amid Governance Crisis: Motorsport World Shaken

In a shocking turn of events, Robert Reid, the FIA’s deputy president for sport, has made a bold move by resigning from his position due to what he describes as a “governance crisis” plaguing the organization. This resignation comes amidst a wave of controversies and concerns about transparency within the governing body under the leadership of Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

Reid, a key figure in Ben Sulayem’s presidential team, has been a pivotal part of the FIA since the 2021 election. However, he has decided to step down, citing a breakdown in governance standards and a lack of due process in decision-making. His departure marks a significant blow to the FIA, with Reid being the highest-ranking sporting official under the president.

Speaking out about his decision, Reid expressed deep concerns about critical choices being made without proper consultation, both internally and with FIA members and governing bodies. While not directly naming Ben Sulayem, Reid emphasized the need for greater accountability within the FIA leadership and criticized recent decisions made without the required approvals.

Reid’s resignation underscores growing unease within the FIA, with other prominent figures also raising alarms about the organization’s direction. David Richards, the chairman of Motorsport UK, has voiced concerns about the increasing opacity of governance and the centralization of power in the hands of the president.

Despite stepping down from his role, Reid has vowed to continue advocating for reform, transparency, and governance that upholds the integrity of the sport. His departure, along with the criticisms from other members, sets the stage for a potential power struggle within the FIA as calls for greater transparency and accountability grow louder.

As the FIA faces mounting pressure to address these issues, all eyes are on Ben Sulayem as he prepares to make his first appearance at a Formula 1 race this season. The upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix could serve as a pivotal moment for the organization as discussions around future regulations loom large.

The resignation of Robert Reid shines a spotlight on the internal turmoil within the FIA and raises questions about the future of governance in motorsport’s global governing body. Stay tuned as this story develops, and the FIA responds to the growing calls for transparency and reform.
