FIA and Formula E Owners Strike Groundbreaking 10-Year Contract Extension

In a historic move that will chart a new course for global motorsport, the FIA and the proprietors of Formula E have finalized a landmark contractual extension that will profoundly alter the landscape of competitive racing for decades to come.

The FIA, the authoritative body overseeing Formula E, has ratified a sweeping ten-year extension of its collaboration with the fully electric championship. This exclusive accord guarantees that Formula E will continue to operate as the highest-tier single-seater series within the FIA framework until a minimum of 2048, with provisions permitting further extension that could carry the partnership through to 2053.

The new accord prohibits any other FIA single-seater series from fully converting to electric propulsion, thereby securing Formula E’s unique positioning. This restriction encompasses the atmospheric icon of Formula 1, which is slated to debut a 50/50 hybrid powertrain split—including both internal combustion and electric components—beginning with the forthcoming season.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, characterized the renewed partnership as a decisive investment in the future. He underscored the FIA’s dedication to enduring stability, continual innovation, and expansion across all disciplines of motorsport. He noted that innovation, ecological stewardship, and technological evolution constitute the very essence of Formula E, thereby forecasting a dynamically promising trajectory for the championship.

The agreement, formalized between the FIA and Liberty Global—Formula E’s principal stakeholder—reinforces the parties’ united commitment to the progressive trajectory of electric motorsport. Mike Fries, Liberty Global’s chief executive, remarked that Formula E embodies the sport of tomorrow, successfully integrating pioneering technology with fiercely competitive racing and a purposeful environmental mission.

Bolstered by the FIA’s steadfast guidance, Formula E is catalysed to broaden its geographical footprint, captivate an enlarged global following, and relentlessly advance the parameters of electric performance. This prolonged cooperation creates a foundation for the series to pioneer the advancing definition of competitive motorsport, advancing a framework that is simultaneously more inventive, more inclusive, and more sustainable—one that aspires to inspire multiple generations of supporters, competitors, and commercial partners.

As the global motorsport community anticipates the ensuing progressive era, Formula E assumes the spotlight, preparing to redefine racing and to engage spectators in an unprecedented spectacle.
