Ferrari’s Plan for Hamilton’s Debut: No F1 Run Until 2025 due to Mercedes’ Tight Hold

Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated debut in Ferrari red is set to be delayed until 2025, as the seven-time world champion won’t participate in the post-season testing session at Abu Dhabi due to commitments with Mercedes. Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari has already generated intense excitement, yet fans will need to wait a little longer to see him take the wheel of a Prancing Horse.

Typically, the post-season test at Yas Marina Circuit provides an opportunity for drivers switching teams to get a jump on the next season, but only if their current team permits an early release. Mercedes has decided to hold Hamilton to his obligations, including a promotional event for its title sponsor Petronas, meaning Hamilton will not be present at the season finale testing session.

As Ferrari gears up for Hamilton’s arrival, team principal Frederic Vasseur has mapped out a plan for the Briton to adapt quickly. Ferrari intends to allocate up to two days of ‘Testing of Previous Cars’ (TPC), allowing Hamilton to get acquainted with Ferrari’s 2022 F1-75 before the official 2025 pre-season testing in Bahrain. “I’m not sure he needs tons of hours of acclimatisation,” Vasseur told Autosport. “He is experienced enough to be quick on the first day, or at least very soon.”

Hamilton’s first Ferrari laps are expected to take place at the Fiorano test track, following in the footsteps of Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari’s last high-profile signing, who conducted his initial laps there. Vasseur added that a dedicated team at Maranello is already laying the groundwork to integrate Hamilton into Ferrari’s operations, ensuring a seamless transition as he joins one of F1’s most storied teams.

With Ferrari committing resources and planning Hamilton’s integration into the team for 2025, fans can expect a carefully orchestrated debut for the Brit, even if it comes a bit later than anticipated.
