Ferrari’s Fred Vasseur Hails Rookie’s Apology After Controversial Crash with Leclerc at Dutch GP

In a dramatic twist at the Dutch Grand Prix, Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has thrown his support behind Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli following a high-stakes crash that took out Charles Leclerc and left fans reeling. Vasseur commended Antonelli for his “right reaction” after the young driver took responsibility following a harrowing collision that ended Leclerc’s race prematurely.

The incident unfolded on lap 53 as Antonelli attempted an ambitious overtaking maneuver on the banking of Turn 3, only to misjudge his entry and understeer directly into Leclerc’s Ferrari. This reckless move not only sent Leclerc spinning into the barriers but also earned Antonelli a 10-second penalty, a consequence that underlines the perilous nature of racing at Zandvoort.

“Of course, it’s a racing incident,” Vasseur stated, reflecting on the crash. “Antonelli came to me and apologized as Charles wasn’t available. I appreciate this – mistakes can happen, especially in such a challenging overtaking zone. He took a risk, encountered trouble, and owned up to it. That’s commendable.”

The rookie driver, visibly shaken yet reflective after the race, expressed his regret. “I saw the opportunity to overtake, especially since I was close and Leclerc had colder tires. I went for it, but it was too much,” Antonelli admitted. “At that moment, I tried to back off, but it was too late. I genuinely feel sorry for Charles. Next time, I’ll think twice before making a move unless I’m absolutely sure I can complete it.”

The fallout from this incident is significant for Ferrari, which faced a disappointing double DNF in Zandvoort, marking a challenging chapter for the storied team. With the Italian Grand Prix looming on September 5-7 at Monza, the Scuderia is eager to regroup and refocus on their home turf. Vasseur and his team hope to shake off the disappointment of the Dutch GP and aim for a strong showing on familiar ground.

As the dust settles on this controversial race, the F1 community is left buzzing with anticipation. Will Ferrari rise from the ashes, and how will Antonelli learn from this crucial lesson on the world stage? The tension is palpable as fans gear up for the next showdown in Monza, where every move counts in the relentless pursuit of glory.
