Hamilton’s Abu Dhabi Qualifying Nightmare: Seven-Time Champion Starts 18th After Freak Bollard Incident – “That was bad, man”

Scuderia Ferrari has sparked a firestorm of debate with its blockbuster decision to sign Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 Formula 1 season. While fans and pundits alike marvel at the spectacle of Hamilton donning Ferrari red, critics are slamming the move as a costly gamble on a driver many believe is past his peak.

One of the most vocal detractors is Lucas di Grassi, former Formula E champion, who didn’t mince words in his critique of Ferrari’s strategy. “I would never hire Hamilton for Ferrari if I were in charge. He’s too expensive and, at 39, he’s no longer in his prime,” Di Grassi said bluntly. His sentiment echoes concerns from within the F1 paddock, where opinions about Hamilton’s move remain sharply divided.

The Cost of Greatness

Ferrari’s decision to poach the seven-time world champion from Mercedes reportedly comes with a staggering $50 million price tag. For Di Grassi, the math simply doesn’t add up. He argued that Maranello should have prioritized a younger talent capable of delivering long-term success. “Ferrari needs someone who can grow into their prime within the team, not a driver who has already seen his best days,” the Brazilian explained.

But Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur isn’t losing sleep over the criticism. Responding to the naysayers, he confidently declared that Hamilton’s wealth of experience and championship pedigree would bring a “fresh perspective” to the Scuderia. “Lewis’s insight could be exactly what we need to take the next step,” Vasseur said, brushing aside the mounting skepticism.

Divided Opinions in the F1 Paddock

Lucas di Grassi isn’t alone in questioning Ferrari’s bold move. Former Ferrari boss Marco Mattiacci had also voiced concerns, calling Hamilton’s signing a “misstep” for a team still chasing its first Constructors’ Championship since 2008. Critics argue that Hamilton’s final season at Mercedes—where he failed to secure a single race win—underscores his waning performance at the highest level.

Yet, Hamilton’s track record speaks for itself. With 103 Grand Prix victories and seven world titles, the Briton remains one of the most decorated drivers in Formula 1 history. Ferrari hopes that his winning mentality and unrivaled experience will galvanize the team and bridge the gap to perennial rivals Red Bull Racing.

Betting Big on 2025

Ferrari’s faith in Hamilton is not without reason. The team finished second in the 2024 Constructors’ standings but remained far behind Red Bull’s dominant pace. With a revamped driver lineup featuring Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Ferrari aims to mount a serious challenge for the championship in 2025.

The gamble is clear: Ferrari is banking on Hamilton’s expertise to bring cohesion and strategy to a team that has often been plagued by operational missteps. Whether the 39-year-old can deliver the results that justify his hefty paycheck remains the ultimate question.

The Clock Is Ticking

As Hamilton prepares to start this new chapter in his illustrious career, the pressure is mounting—not just on the Briton but on Ferrari itself. The signing has polarized the racing world, with fans split between excitement and skepticism.

Will Ferrari’s $50 million gamble pay off, or will it become a cautionary tale of miscalculated ambition? The answer will come soon enough as the 2025 season looms, with Maranello poised to either silence its critics or add another chapter to its storied legacy of triumphs and tribulations.

For now, the only certainty is this: Ferrari’s high-stakes move has everyone watching—and that’s exactly what the Scuderia thrives on.
