Ferrari will test a new update at the Imola circuit to challenge Red Bull’s bold theory.

Ferrari testará nova atualização no circuito de Imola para desafiar teoria ousada da Red Bull.

Ferrari is about to introduce its first significant season update package for the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. Team principal Vasseur describes this as a “minor breakthrough” that could allow them to consistently compete with Red Bull. The new parts were tested at Fiorano last week and include modifications to the sidepod inlets, as well as changes to the floor and rear wing. The effectiveness of this package will be crucial in determining whether Ferrari can close the gap to Red Bull as the season progresses.

According to Charles Leclerc, the updates will play a crucial role in the outcome of the season. Ferrari will have their updates soon and this will have a significant impact on the remainder of their campaign. Vasseur believes that the current performance parity between the teams means that even a small improvement for Ferrari could bring them closer to Red Bull or even level the playing field.

In the recent Miami Grand Prix, Ferrari showed promising performance. Leclerc was only 0.141 seconds behind in qualifying and had a race pace similar to that of Red Bull and McLaren. However, Max Verstappen’s race was hampered by damage sustained in a collision, and Red Bull faced tire issues throughout the weekend. Vasseur acknowledges that Red Bull still has a slight advantage, but Ferrari’s progress in the past year has put them under pressure and disrupted their comfort zone from the previous season.

Currently, Ferrari holds the second position in terms of performance and points this season. They are approximately 0.351% slower than Red Bull in terms of single lap pace and generally lag behind by 0.2-0.3 seconds per lap in terms of race pace. The recent McLaren update in Miami, along with the new developments from Red Bull, has put additional pressure on Ferrari to progress. The Imola package is not a game-changer, but it is a significant step in their 2024 upgrade plan.

Vasseur emphasizes that the development process is not influenced by the location of the race, but rather driven by the team’s readiness to produce new parts. The proximity of Imola to the factory allows for a slightly delayed release of updates. Although the team does not expect the package to be a game-changer, the fierce competition means that even small improvements can bring performance gains.

The development race is comparable to pitstop strategy. Teams must decide whether to underestimate their competitors by implementing updates early or outperform them by maximizing the potential of their current setup while watching the progress of their rivals. Ferrari seems to have reacted to McLaren’s update in Miami with their new sidepod inlet arrangement, which bears similarities to Red Bull’s solution. The modifications focus on the front part of the sidepod inlet, especially on the alignment of airflow from the rear edge of the front wing. Ferrari has also made changes to the sidepod furniture and mirror support.

More changes are set to be revealed at Imola, and the pressure of a home race will add an extra dimension for Ferrari. It will be interesting to see how they handle this pressure and how these developments position them among the competition for the first European race.
