The 2024 Formula 1 season started with Ferrari as the closest competitor to Red Bull, but that is no longer the case. Lando Norris and McLaren are now pressuring Max Verstappen, while Ferrari doesn’t have the pace to be in the fight and is even vulnerable against Mercedes. Based on the last race, Ferrari is on its way to becoming the fourth-best team in F1. The battle at the front of the grid is intense, but Ferrari is consistently falling behind. After a disappointing Spanish Grand Prix, where the Ferrari drivers collided and finished well behind the winner, it became clear that Ferrari’s performance did not meet expectations. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz expressed their disappointment with Ferrari’s performance in Spain. Leclerc stated that Ferrari did not perform as expected and urged the team to respond quickly. Sainz believed that Ferrari should have been competing for pole position in Spain, but they fell short. There is a disconnect between how the drivers feel about Ferrari’s performance and how the team itself perceives it. Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur painted a more positive picture, highlighting that a slight improvement in performance could have put Ferrari ahead of Mercedes on the grid. However, it is clear that Ferrari is losing ground in the battle at the front of the grid. Ferrari has introduced improvements to its car, but they have not made a significant difference compared to Red Bull and McLaren. Ferrari’s Jock Clear described the improvements as incremental improvements in aerodynamic pressure. Although the drivers believe that the improvements are bringing the expected performance gain, it remains to be seen if Ferrari is doing enough to keep up with its rivals. The current trend suggests that McLaren and Mercedes are improving at a faster pace than Ferrari. Ferrari’s performance is insufficient on circuits with high-speed demands and long corners, while it performs better on circuits with shorter corners. McLaren, on the other hand, has created a well-balanced car that performs well on a wide range of circuits. Ferrari’s car is powerful on specific circuits but falls behind on conventional tracks. The Ferrari team boss is willing to accept this compromise if it means winning on circuits like Monaco, Baku, and Singapore. However, it is clear that McLaren’s development and understanding of the current rules have surpassed Ferrari’s. Ferrari runs the risk of falling behind, even if it is making incremental improvements. McLaren and Red Bull are still ahead of Ferrari in terms of performance on different types of circuits. The loss of Ferrari’s advantage over McLaren at the start of the season should be a cause for concern.
