Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has doubled down on the team’s decision to sign Lewis Hamilton, emphasizing the seven-time world champion’s invaluable experience as Formula 1 approaches its monumental 2026 regulation changes. Despite the Briton enduring a challenging farewell season at Mercedes—being outqualified by George Russell 19-5 and out-raced 14-9—Ferrari believes Hamilton’s expertise will be a critical asset in their quest to return to the top.
Hamilton’s Final Mercedes Season: A Mixed Bag
Hamilton’s 2024 season at Mercedes was a rollercoaster. While he delivered standout performances, including victories at Silverstone and Spa, his overall campaign highlighted struggles. George Russell, his younger teammate, frequently outshone him in qualifying and race results, raising questions about Hamilton’s consistency and adaptability.
However, Vasseur brushed aside these concerns, focusing on what Hamilton brings beyond raw speed.
“As far as Lewis is concerned, it’s not just about speed or pure performance,” Vasseur told AutoSprint. “He will bring the experience of a seven-time world champion who has worked in top teams. It’s very good for a team to have someone who brings different experiences, especially someone of Lewis’ level.”
The Importance of Experience for 2026
The decision to replace Carlos Sainz with Hamilton wasn’t solely based on performance but also on Ferrari’s strategic outlook for the 2026 season. That year will see dramatic changes to F1’s power unit regulations, and Hamilton’s past success in guiding Mercedes through the turbo-hybrid era in 2014 provides Ferrari with a crucial edge.
“I think Hamilton is the best solution for us today also in view of the regulatory changes in 2026,” Vasseur explained. “He’s someone who can offer immense value through his knowledge and presence, even if he doesn’t quite match Charles Leclerc’s pace.”
Hamilton’s Role at Ferrari
While Hamilton may no longer be the outright fastest on the grid, Ferrari sees his addition as more than just a driver—he’s a leader who can help Charles Leclerc navigate Ferrari’s growth into the new era. The 39-year-old’s proven ability to guide a team during transitional phases makes him an ideal figure to mentor younger drivers and shape Ferrari’s technical and strategic development.
“It is always important to try to learn from someone from outside, no matter if it is Hamilton or someone else,” Vasseur added. “I am convinced he will fit perfectly into our system.”
Mercedes’ Gamble with Antonelli
Meanwhile, Mercedes has opted for youth by promoting Andrea Kimi Antonelli, signaling a shift in their long-term strategy. While the 18-year-old F2 standout represents the future, Vasseur is confident that Ferrari made the right call by prioritizing experience over youth.
“I don’t have the arrogance to comment on the choices of other teams, but Hamilton is what we need right now. His leadership and insights are irreplaceable as we prepare for 2026.”
Looking Ahead
Ferrari enters 2025 with high expectations, building on their late-season momentum where they closed the gap to McLaren and challenged for victories. With Charles Leclerc leading the charge and Lewis Hamilton bringing unparalleled experience, the Scuderia hopes to reclaim their place at the top of the Constructors’ Championship.
