Sergio Perez from Mexico, piloting for Red Bull Racing, competes in the Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 2, Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 09.03.2024.
Both Ferrari and Mercedes have dismissed the idea of requesting a review of Formula 1 technical regulations due to concerns about Red Bull’s continued dominance in the sport until 2024.
Red Bull has been overwhelmingly successful since the reintroduction of ground effect cars in 2022, winning 39 of the last 44 races up to the current season.
The Austrian team has maintained their significant advantage at the start of the new season, achieving consecutive 1st and 2nd place wins and seeming to replicate the success of the previous year.
The fact that Red Bull remains unchallenged this season has raised concerns that they will continue to be unbeatable until the next major regulation change, expected in 2026.
However, Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, has rejected the idea that competitors should ask for rule adjustments, similar to what Red Bull’s Christian Horner did during Mercedes’ dominance.
Wolff believes that Formula 1 is a fair sport and it would be unfair to penalize Red Bull for the shortcomings of other teams.
“I don’t want to make the same mistake as my colleague team principal from the neighboring team, who suggested in 2014 and 2015 that we should change the regulations because of our dominance,” Wolff stated.
“I believe Red Bull has done an exceptional job compared to all other teams in the last two years, and credit should be given where it is due.”
“They are way ahead of everyone else and no other team comes close. They had some competition from Ferrari and Charles Leclerc, and if Carlos Sainz was here, they would have faced stronger competition. However, the performance difference between them and the rest of the field is not significant, regardless of the track. They are simply in a different league.”
“Our sport is based on fairness, and the best performance is rewarded based on the car, the machine, and the driver.”
Ferrari has emerged as the main rival to Red Bull in the early stages of the season, showing their revamped car and securing consecutive podiums. Despite Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari’s team principal, acknowledging that they have halved the gap to Red Bull, Charles Leclerc finished 18.6 seconds behind Max Verstappen in Saudi Arabia. However, like Mercedes, Vasseur emphasizes that Ferrari’s main goal is to reduce the distance to the reigning champions, rather than interfere with the sport’s governing bodies. When asked about the potential negative impact of Red Bull’s continued success in Formula 1, Vasseur replied: “Yes, but if we can replicate the progress we made last year, it’s encouraging. And honestly, my focus is on the team and the continuous development of the car. Even if we find ourselves ahead of Red Bull in a weekend, I will maintain the same approach and strive to improve in the next race. Being in P1, P2, or P3 does not mean we should halt our progress or development. We are fully committed and will continue with the same approach. While I cannot deny it is a concern, what truly matters is that we are fully dedicated to achieving. It is clear they still have an advantage over us, and we must persist in our development and move forward. Today’s performance is a clear step in the right direction. Last week in Bahrain, we already showed promising signs. This progress is highly encouraging for everyone involved and serves as the best motivation for the entire team.”
