Fernando Alonso: “2026 Is a Day by Day Journey” Amid Retirement Rumors

In a gripping revelation that has the motorsport world buzzing, Formula 1 icon Fernando Alonso has declared he will approach the 2026 season “day by day.” As speculation intensifies surrounding his potential retirement in the coming years, the Aston Martin star remains committed to his team and closely engaged with owner Lawrence Stroll regarding the looming regulatory changes.

Alonso candidly stated, “Since I don’t have a crystal ball, I gave an answer that will be valid forever.” This comment comes in light of his recent admission that if his car performs well, 2026 may indeed mark his last year on the grid. “I think that until May, that’s how I feel right now. If I have a car that I enjoy driving and get some results with, I think that maybe… I mean, I’ll always discuss with Lawrence and the team what their needs are, and the team will come first and me second. I don’t need to race to prove anything.”

At 44, Alonso is the oldest driver in the F1 circuit, but he exudes confidence in his driving prowess, despite struggling with the Aston Martin team over the past two seasons. “I feel better than ever. Yes, I think so,” he asserted. “Last year and this year the car is probably not where we see it in the standings. I think we have some problems behind us and we’ve been dealing with some weaknesses that I don’t think are too obvious from the outside sometimes.”

Reflecting on his career, Alonso expressed contentment with his journey in F1. “I’m happy with my career and I consider myself very fortunate to have been here for so many years. Now is the time to help the team and have fun, so that’s something I’ll have to see day by day next year.”

As F1 gears up for a transformative year in 2026, introducing significant changes to car designs and increased driver autonomy, Alonso remains skeptical about the impact of these advancements. “I think it’s always the same in Formula 1. You always have to sell the product for next year and say that magical things will happen next year,” he remarked. He recalls the time when traction control was banned, thinking it would reward skilled drivers, only to witness teams like Red Bull dominate with technical innovations that rendered the drivers’ skills secondary.

“I’m definitely excited about next year, exploring what the rules give the driver, hopefully more than this year,” Alonso stated, though he continued to voice concerns regarding the restrictions that still linger in the regulations. “I think there are still a lot of restrictions in the regulations for next year.”

As the countdown to 2026 begins, fans are left on the edge of their seats, wondering whether Alonso’s exceptional career will culminate in a grand finale or if this remarkable driver will continue to defy age and expectations. Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: Fernando Alonso’s journey in Formula 1 is far from over.
