Fernando Alonso’s Next Frontier: The Dakar Challenge Looms as F1 Icon Eyes the Future

Aston Martin optimistic about team’s performance following Fernando Alonso’s struggles

Fernando Alonso is no stranger to conquering motorsport’s greatest challenges. With two Formula 1 World Championships, victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and a World Endurance Championship (WEC) title to his name, the Asturian has built a legacy as one of racing’s most versatile and relentless competitors. Yet, at 43, Alonso has his sights set on a challenge that remains tantalizingly out of reach: winning the Dakar Rally.

As Alonso prepares for the 2025 F1 season with Aston Martin, he reflects on this pending goal—a task as grueling as it is distinct from his experience in Formula 1.

The Dakar Dream: A New Dimension of Racing

Alonso, who has already flirted with the Dakar Rally during his hiatus from F1 in 2020, acknowledges the monumental learning curve required to succeed in this brutal off-road race. Unlike the precision and strategy of Formula 1, the Dakar demands endurance, adaptability, and a unique partnership with a co-driver.

“One of the challenges I still have to win is the Dakar,” Alonso said, highlighting the technical and mental demands of rally racing. “In rallies, you have a co-driver who tells you the route, but you also have to keep both feet on the pedal for almost the entire stage. You stabilize the rally car by playing with the weight when cornering and braking. It’s a completely different technology to that of Formula cars.”

For Alonso, mastering the Dakar is not just about expanding his racing résumé—it’s about immersing himself in a new discipline that contrasts sharply with his Formula 1 expertise.

A Lifelong Passion for Driving

After 24 years at the pinnacle of motorsport, Alonso shows no signs of slowing down. Reflecting on his life behind the wheel, he said:
“I love racing. I had a steering wheel in my hand when I was three years old. Now I’m 43, so I’ve been driving for 40 years. I imagine it won’t be possible to stop for one night and never drive again.”

For Alonso, racing is more than a career—it’s a way of life. Whether it’s F1, endurance racing, or rallying, his unrelenting drive underscores his enduring passion for motorsport.

The Aston Martin Equation: A Final F1 Chapter?

Alonso’s immediate focus remains on Formula 1, where his partnership with Aston Martin has yet to yield the desired results. After a lackluster 2024 season, the Silverstone-based team has recruited legendary designer Adrian Newey in a bid to elevate its performance. Alonso, known for his ability to extract every ounce of performance from a car, could be poised for one final shot at a world championship.

With Aston Martin banking on Newey’s expertise to bridge the gap to the front, Alonso’s final years in F1 could be as thrilling as ever. The team’s ambition and Alonso’s determination make for a tantalizing prospect in 2025.

A Legacy That Transcends F1

Regardless of what happens in Formula 1, Alonso’s career trajectory suggests he won’t fade quietly into retirement. His insatiable appetite for competition has already taken him across the motorsport spectrum, and the Dakar Rally represents the next mountain to climb.

Whether Alonso adds a Dakar win to his already legendary résumé or continues to push the limits in other forms of racing, his story is far from over. At 43, the Asturian remains a force to be reckoned with, proving that age is no barrier to ambition.
