Fernando Alonso’s Bold Statement: “Why Stop When I Feel Like the Best? I Had Lunch with Newey and…”

Fernando Alonso, the Spanish champion, is facing a challenging start to the 2025 season with Aston Martin, still sitting at zero points after the first five races. This is not unfamiliar territory for Alonso, who has experienced similar situations three times before with Minardi in 2001, and McLaren in 2015 and 2017. The technical crisis at Aston Martin is glaring, especially considering they use the same engine as McLaren, which is excelling in the current season.

Looking ahead to the future, Aston Martin’s owner, Lawrence Stroll, has made significant investments for the 2026 season, securing talents like Adrian Newey, Andy Cowell, and Enrico Cardile from top teams like Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari. Despite rumors circulating about Max Verstappen, Alonso remains a crucial part of the team’s plans for the upcoming season.

During the Miami weekend, Alonso, in statements collected by As, confidently stated, “I keep driving because I feel like the best. Why should I stop? We are not as competitive as we wanted and hoped, but there is not a single reason. We have not made progress, but we hope to react and do things better in the upcoming races.”

Alonso recently met with Adrian Newey, where they discussed the future of Aston Martin. Alonso shared, “I am not too worried about 2026. With the new rules and Adrian on board, there will be a complete reset. It was an exciting experience to talk and work with him.” Their meeting focused on general team discussions and potential changes to improve the team’s performance based on Newey’s expertise.

As Alonso navigates through a challenging season, his determination and belief in his abilities remain unwavering, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead in Formula 1.
