Fernando Alonso finished the Mexico City Grand Prix in Formula 1 with his second retirement of the year – and in consecutive fashion. A damaged Aston Martin determined the outcome, when points were out of reach.
The two-time champion explained that the damage was likely incurred early in the race and worsened after the red flag restart: ‘It was a difficult race and weekend for us. It seems that we picked up some debris damage on the first lap after the accident at turn one and we seemed to lose performance. We tried to fix this during the red flag, but it got worse after the restart and so we ended up having to retire the car’.
Despite the tough challenges he has faced, Alonso takes away the learnings, now looking towards the final phase of the year: ‘It hasn’t been an easy triple header so far, but you learn more from the difficulties than when you have success. We have three more races this season on very different tracks, so we will try again in Brazil’.
