In a sudden turn of events, Aston Martin was compelled to switch drivers for the final morning session of pre-season testing. Canadian Lance Stroll, originally scheduled to be at the helm, was replaced by Fernando Alonso as he was reportedly not in top shape. The last-minute change was announced by the team on Friday morning, stating that Stroll “wasn’t feeling 100 per cent” following the previous night.

The pre-season testing at Bahrain circuit saw Stroll and Alonso alternating sessions over the span of three days. Stroll was slated to be in the driving seat of the Aston Martin AMR25 during the final morning of testing. Nonetheless, due to his less than optimal condition, the team decided to reshuffle their lineup, assigning Alonso to take charge of the morning session.

Aston Martin will make a subsequent announcement regarding whether Stroll will be fit enough to take over from Alonso for the afternoon session and conclude the pre-season venture. In a statement made to PlanetF1.com, the team disclosed, “Overnight Lance wasn’t feeling 100%. Fernando will now drive the car this morning and we’ll confirm our line-up for this afternoon in due course.”

In addition to their core drivers, Aston Martin also had backup driver Felipe Drugovich on standby during the week’s events in Bahrain.

Earlier in the week, Stroll had interacted with the media, including PlanetF1.com, sharing insights about Aston Martin’s significant efforts with the new AMR25. The team has been applying the lessons they gleaned from the previous season. Stroll expressed his excitement about the beginning of the new season, stating, “Yeah, you know, a lot of work has gone into AMR25. Learning from last year, areas of the car that we think we could improve on. So yeah, we’ll see, still very early days. But yeah, it’s good to be back in the car.”

This unforeseen driver change underscores the unpredictable nature of racing, the importance of driver well-being, and the strategic decisions teams must make in response to such situations.
