Fernando Alonso sparks debate: can the best driver finally reclaim the title after 19 years?

Fernando Alonso Drops a Bombshell: “It’s Been 19 Years Since the Best Driver Won the Championship!”

As the adrenaline-fueled drama of the Formula 1 season reaches its climax, all eyes are on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where the ultimate showdown for the 2025 World Championship is set to unfold. Will it be Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, or Oscar Piastri who claims the prestigious title? The stakes have never been higher, and the tension is palpable as the world of motorsport holds its breath.

In a riveting press interaction, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who last hoisted the championship trophy in 2006, weighed in on the fierce competition. The 42-year-old Aston Martin driver reflected on the immense pressure that comes with the final race weekend, revealing the psychological toll it can take on even the most seasoned athletes. “It’s difficult,” Alonso confessed. “After yesterday’s events and today’s media frenzy, you can’t escape the fact that this is an incredibly special race. There’s always pressure, but when you close your visor and leave the pits, your driving style and desire to win remain unchanged. Inside the car, it’s just another race.”

Alonso’s insights are particularly poignant as he reminisced about the intense title battle of 2010, where he found himself in a three-way fight for the crown, ultimately falling short to Sebastian Vettel. Reflecting on that iconic season, he noted, “The last time we had three contenders was in 2010. Making predictions is tough. The leader usually has an edge, but as we know, F1 is unpredictable. Mistakes can happen, as we saw with the Safety Car situation last week; not capitalizing on it was a critical error.”

In a twist that could send shockwaves through the paddock, Alonso addressed a bold statement made by Verstappen, who claimed he would secure the championship driving a McLaren. “You never know,” Alonso replied, maintaining an air of mystery. “Max is an incredible driver and knows how to extract every ounce of performance from his car. We all believe we can win with the best machinery, but that’s a tricky question to answer.”

The veteran driver didn’t hold back when a journalist posed a provocative query: “If Max Verstappen doesn’t win the championship, will we have a champion who isn’t the best driver?” Alonso’s response was laced with his trademark wit: “This has been the case for 19 years now. If it happens again, it will be the twentieth!”

As the countdown to the final race ticks away, Alonso underscored the psychological warfare that takes place among competitors. “The mental games are always there. You observe your rivals during practice sessions, trying to apply pressure. When we meet for the driver briefings, you can sense the different body language. But in the end, it all boils down to the performance of the car,” he asserted.

With the lights set to go out in Abu Dhabi, the world waits in anticipation to see who will emerge as the champion. Will it be a new face or a seasoned hero reclaiming glory? One thing is certain: the battle for the title has never been more electrifying!
