Fernando Alonso Blasts FIA Guidelines: “Harshest Penalty in 25 Years!”

Former Formula 1 champion, Fernando Alonso, is not holding back in his criticism of the FIA’s penalty system, citing his own experience with what he considers the most severe penalty in the last 25 years. The Spaniard recalled a race incident in the 2024 Australian Grand Prix where he received a hefty punishment from the race stewards, leaving him frustrated with the governing body’s decisions.

Throughout his illustrious F1 career, Alonso has had his fair share of run-ins with the FIA and race stewards, often accusing them of bias towards British drivers. The recent publication of the FIA’s penalty guidelines has reignited Alonso’s discontent, especially reflecting on the harsh penalty he received for an incident involving George Russell in Australia.

Alonso expressed his discontent, stating, “When you make a mistake and cross the white line, or you exceed the speed in the pit lane, it’s a driving error that can be penalized with five seconds or a drive-through. But last year, I received the harshest penalty in the last 25 years. 20 seconds and three penalty points for a contactless incident. These things are not right, but we all try to learn and adapt.”

The Aston Martin driver’s remarks shed light on the ongoing debate surrounding the consistency and fairness of FIA penalties in Formula 1. Alonso’s outspoken criticism adds fuel to the fire, questioning the transparency and equality in the enforcement of rules within the sport.

As the FIA continues to refine its guidelines for race penalties, Alonso’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the contentious relationship between drivers and the governing body. Will his words spark change in the way penalties are handed out in Formula 1, or will the status quo prevail? Only time will tell in this high-speed drama on and off the track.
