Fernando Alonso slams F1’s ‘fun factor’: has safety tech ruined the thrill of racing?

Fernando Alonso Sounds Alarm: F1 Takes a ‘Step Backwards’ Amidst Technological Advancements!

As Fernando Alonso gears up for his monumental 23rd season in Formula 1, the legendary driver is raising eyebrows with a bold critique of the sport he loves. While the racing world has undoubtedly transformed during his impressive 26-year journey, Alonso believes one vital element has drastically declined.

The Spanish sensation, who first burst onto the scene with Minardi in 2001, has witnessed a whirlwind of changes—some for the better, some not so much. “F1 has changed for the better in terms of safety, selling the show to the public and technology,” Alonso stated in a recent interview. He highlighted the remarkable evolution of power units that now boast up to 60% less fuel consumption compared to two decades ago, all while delivering equal or even superior performance.

But hold on—there’s a catch! Despite these technological marvels, Alonso laments a significant loss: the sheer joy of driving. He candidly remarked, “The fun behind the steering wheel, maybe that has taken a step backwards.” With safety measures and advanced tech leading to longer and heavier cars, the thrill of maneuverability seems to have vanished from the cockpit.

This coming season introduces a glimmer of hope, as cars will sport a more compact design—20 centimeters shorter and 10 centimeters narrower, along with a 30-kilogram weight reduction. While this change is a step in the right direction, it still doesn’t quite capture the essence of the nimble machines from Alonso’s early racing days in the noughties.

Alonso’s enduring passion for motorsport shines through as he discusses his love for all things on four wheels. “When I’m not in Formula 1, I’m on a go-kart circuit, or a buggy in the middle of the dunes, or a rally car,” he shared. No matter where he races, it’s clear that Formula 1 remains the pinnacle of motorsport for him, despite its growing pains.

As fans look ahead to the dramatic shifts expected in the 2026 season—such as movable wings and a full embrace of sustainable fuel—Alonso’s insights offer a sobering reminder: progress in technology doesn’t always equate to an exhilarating driving experience.

Stay tuned for what promises to be a thrilling yet contemplative season in Formula 1, as Fernando Alonso continues to challenge the norms and push for a sport that balances safety and excitement. Is the roar of the engines still as sweet, or has F1 lost its spark? Only time will tell!
