After a rollercoaster 2024 Formula 1 season, Fernando Alonso is focusing on the positives as Aston Martin works to bounce back in 2025. While the team endured a significant performance slump, particularly in the second half of the season, Alonso believes the challenges faced this year have laid a solid foundation for improvement with the AMR25.
From Promising Start to a Painful Decline
Aston Martin kicked off the 2024 season as a strong midfield contender, edging closer to the top four. Alonso showcased his trademark skill in qualifying, securing fifth in Japan and third in China, proving the team had the potential to punch above its weight. However, as the season progressed, development issues took their toll, leaving Aston Martin lagging behind.
The numbers tell the story:
- Constructors’ Standings: Aston Martin scored 94 points, a steep drop from the 280 points they managed in 2023.
- Alonso’s Performance: The Spaniard finished in the top 10 only five times across the final 10 races.
Reflecting on the team’s decline, Alonso admitted:
“We started quite strong, but we are now in a position that we’re struggling to be in Q3 on some occasions.”
Finding Positives in the Struggles
Despite the downturn, Alonso views the challenges of 2024 as an opportunity for growth. He believes the team’s struggles have provided valuable insights that can be applied to the development of next year’s car:
“All those difficulties are teaching us a lot of lessons, which we will apply into next year’s car. That will be probably the biggest positive aspect of the second part of the year.”
Alonso emphasized that Aston Martin now has a clear understanding of where their car fell short:
“Even if we didn’t succeed in putting much performance on the car, it’s well understood what we are struggling with at the moment. So that will be applied in 2025.”
Highlights Amid the Challenges
While the second half of 2024 was largely disappointing, Alonso pinpointed Baku and Singapore as standout moments. Finishing sixth in Azerbaijan and eighth in Singapore, Alonso attributed these results to strong qualifying performances on street circuits:
“Baku and Singapore were just good Sundays, thanks to good qualifyings on Saturday. We maximized the opportunities there, and some of our rivals didn’t perform to perfection.”
Looking Ahead to 2025
Aston Martin has been working tirelessly to bring upgrades throughout 2024, though many failed to deliver the desired results. Despite this, Alonso is optimistic about the team’s trajectory:
“There is a clear understanding now of where the path is into next year’s car. That’s the aim.”
The AMR25 represents a fresh start for Aston Martin, and with Alonso’s experience and determination, the team will look to reclaim its competitive edge. While the 2024 season ended on a challenging note, the lessons learned could pave the way for a stronger comeback in 2025.
Can Alonso Lead Aston Martin Back to the Front?
As Aston Martin turns the page on a turbulent season, all eyes will be on Fernando Alonso and the AMR25 to see if the team can translate its hard-earned lessons into meaningful progress. With Alonso’s track record of extracting the best from any car, 2025 could see Aston Martin return to the sharp end of the midfield—or even beyond.
