Fernando Alonso has been speculated as one of the possible successors to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for the 2025 Formula 1 season. However, for now, he only wants to focus on the task at hand with Aston Martin without worrying about the future.
The Spanish driver said, as quoted by the official championship website, “It’s something I’m not thinking about at the moment. There’s so much going on with the new car and the winter tests being so short, so intense, that you have to do everything in a day and a half. But I’m aware, at the same time, that the driver market started a little earlier this year. Instead of summer, it’s already March and there are no world champions available – with Lewis at Ferrari and Max [Verstappen] at Red Bull. I’m probably the only free agent for next year. I’m not very interested at the moment, but I’m aware of the situation.”
Although Aston Martin is the priority, Alonso did not hide the fact that he believes he could be coveted: “I want to talk first with Aston Martin because I feel very much a part of this project. But if I find out that we can’t reach an agreement and I want to commit to competing in Formula 1, I know I have a privileged position. I’m probably attractive to other teams, the performance they saw last year, the commitment. And, as I said, there are only three world champions in the field and only one is available…”
