As tensions between Max Verstappen and George Russell boil over ahead of the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has stepped in to defend Russell against Verstappen’s claims that the Mercedes driver has “two faces.”

The Root of the Feud

The feud began during the Qatar GP, where Verstappen lost pole position after being penalized for impeding Russell during qualifying. Verstappen accused Russell of manipulating the situation during the stewards’ hearing, saying Russell shows different personas around officials and media. Russell retaliated, revealing Verstappen allegedly threatened to “put me on my f***ing head in the wall.”

The war of words has intensified, with Verstappen doubling down, saying he has “no regrets” about his harsh remarks. Russell, meanwhile, has stood firm, accusing Verstappen of being “above the law” in his approach.

Alonso’s Defense of Russell

Attempting to calm the growing hostility, Alonso dismissed Verstappen’s accusations, praising Russell’s integrity as a driver and a person. Speaking to media, Alonso said:

“No, I don’t think so. I think George is a great driver, a great person. I’m a good friend of George as well. I don’t think that he’s showing different faces here and there.”

Alonso Criticizes Stewarding Inconsistencies

Rather than taking sides in the personal clash, Alonso highlighted a broader issue affecting the F1 paddock: inconsistent penalty decisions by race officials. He suggested that these inconsistencies often lead to frustration among drivers and could have fueled the Verstappen-Russell conflict.

“Some of the penalties are a little bit not consistent. If you replicate the same episode from one event to another, you don’t get the same result in terms of penalties,” Alonso explained.

Hope for Change

Alonso expressed optimism that the recent changes in the FIA’s officiating structure, including the appointment of a new Race Director Rui Marques, could lead to more consistent decisions moving forward.

“We changed the race director; we changed some of the people in the stewards’ room. Hopefully, those changes improve the consistency that we are asking for.”

A Call for Cooler Heads

As the season finale looms, Alonso’s comments serve as a reminder to focus on the broader issues affecting the sport rather than fueling personal rivalries. The veteran driver’s perspective underscores the need for consistency in officiating to avoid such conflicts in the future.

With the Abu Dhabi GP marking the end of a season filled with drama on and off the track, all eyes will be on Verstappen and Russell to see if the tensions spill over into the final race—or if they can channel their frustrations into a clean, competitive showdown under the Yas Marina lights.
