Fernando Alonso declares Aston Martin’s ambitious journey: must walk before we run in F1 2026

Title: Fernando Alonso Urges Aston Martin to Take Cautious Steps After Shaky Bahrain Test

In a bold and revealing statement, two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has laid bare the hurdles facing Aston Martin as the team gears up for the 2026 season. Following a tumultuous testing period in Bahrain, Alonso emphasized the monumental task ahead for the Silverstone squad under the guidance of new team principal Adrian Newey and power unit supplier Honda. The message was clear: Aston Martin must “walk before we run.”

The Bahrain tests were anything but smooth, with Aston Martin recording the lowest mileage of all teams on the track. Alonso managed to complete 98 laps, while his teammate Lance Stroll added another 108. Team ambassador Pedro de la Rosa did not mince words, openly acknowledging that Aston Martin is “clearly behind” its competitors. Yet, the seasoned Alonso remains undeterred, expressing optimism despite the challenges.

“This feels like an important moment in Aston Martin’s project,” Alonso stated confidently. The team is finally reaping the rewards of its new facilities, boasting its own wind tunnel and gearbox for the first time in history. “We have our own gearbox — that’s a big challenge — but it gives us the freedom to design key components of the car for the first time,” Alonso explained. The introduction of Honda as a partner is another significant leap forward, presenting both opportunities and obstacles.

Amid these changes, Alonso is acutely aware of the integration challenges that lie ahead. “All the pieces are coming together,” he noted, while candidly admitting that this season may start off slowly. “Coming from seventh in the constructors’ championship last year, we need to walk before we run and take things one step at a time.”

The competitive spirit is alive within Alonso, who is hungry for victory but realistic about the time it takes to build a championship-contending team. “We’re competitors — we want to win and fight for big things — but that requires time. We want to make that timeline as short as possible,” he declared.

As fans and critics alike hold their breath, all eyes will be on Aston Martin to see if they can transform their aspirations into reality. With a new era dawning in Silverstone, the question remains: will they rise to the challenge or stumble as they seek to regain their former glory? The 2026 season promises to be a thrilling ride, and Alonso’s unwavering determination could be the spark that ignites Aston Martin's resurgence on the Formula 1 stage.
