Felipe Drugovich’s Formula E Debut Marred by Grid Penalty Nightmare

Felipe Drugovich’s entry into Formula E could hardly be more theatrical. Stepping onto the grid at the Berlin E-Prix, the young Brazilian faces a serious headache: a 20-place grid penalty that threatens to undo his weekend before it even begins.

Image the scene. Drugovich, Aston Martins Formula One reserve and the 2022 Formula Two champion, has been borrowed by Mahindra to replace Nyck de Vries for these city-center races while De Vries contests elsewhere for Toyota. Its an unexpected chance for the rookie to shine. The problem, however, is that the team changed the gearbox outside the permitted window. The stewards noticed, handed down the penalty, and suddenly a promising debut became an uphill battle.

So what does all of this mean for Felipe Drugovich on race day? If he is unable to serve his time penalty ahead of the opening laps, he will almost certainly receive a drive-through penalty the moment the field reaches the start-finish line at Tempelhof Airport. Unfortunately, the problem is not exclusive to him. Nick Cassidy, racing for Jaguar, faces a grid drop of his own, and stewards have left the door open for a drive-through infringement as well.

The forecast compounds the tension: the Berlin sky looks as if someone has spilled a bucket of water across the paddock. First practice could turn out to be their lone opportunity for dry running, after which the track will almost certainly become slippery and unpredictable. Under those tricky conditions Drugovich still managed the sixteenth-fastest time, a result that feels modest but at least preserves an avenue for improvement. Edo Mortara, his teammate, enjoyed a fortune more favourable; he took second place and proved that Jaguar power in the wet still carries bite.

Unexpected twists appear to be the only constant in Formula E’s Berlin weekend. Supporters may want to fasten their seatbelts, because the storyline for Drugovich-and indeed for the entire field-is clear: the coming hours promise moments of triumph, frustration, and everything in between.
