The aspirations of Andretti to enter Formula 1 have been strongly opposed by current teams, even after the “green light” from the FIA in the initial stage of the entry process. Now, there is speculation about an attempt by the championship to make General Motors abandon the project – where it is represented by the Cadillac brand.
According to the Associated Press, which cites three directly involved sources, F1 has asked GM to separate from Andretti. The big question surrounding the entry of an 11th team in the premier class is the revenue distribution, as the current ten teams would have one more rival to share the money with – which could generate potential losses.
There are four team bosses particularly resistant to Andretti’s entry: Günther Steiner (Haas), Mike Krack (Aston Martin), Toto Wolff (Mercedes), and Zak Brown (McLaren). Recently, they all denied having any resentment or anger towards Michael Andretti – the mentor of the Andretti Cadillac project. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem commented on the reason for the opposition to the new team: ‘It’s about the money. It’s only about the money. That’s what’s personal. They don’t want to share the money’.
