This conference took place during the Formula 1 World Championship, Stage 9, Canadian Grand Prix, held in Montreal, Canada, on Practice Day.
Several Formula 1 team principals expressed concerns about whether the current version of the 2026 technical regulations would be able to achieve the established objectives. The FIA presented an initial proposal for the reform of future rules, aiming to introduce lighter and smaller cars to enhance the overall racing spectacle. The goal for the 2026 cars is to reduce their weight by 30kg, reaching 768kg. Additionally, the width of the cars will be reduced from 2000mm to 1900mm, and the wheelbase will be shortened by 200mm, reaching 3400mm.
In addition, the FIA has announced that active aerodynamics will be used as a means to balance the shift towards engines that rely more on the electric side. However, Andrea Stella, McLaren’s boss, agrees with the overall goals that the sport is pursuing, but believes that changes are necessary to achieve them. Stella stated: “We agree and support the intentions and goals stated in the press release. However, when we analyze the regulations in their current form, they are still far from being able to fulfill these agreed objectives and intentions. Now is the time for the FIA, Formula 1, and the teams to collaborate, listen to each other, and contribute to finding a solution that allows the sport to achieve these goals. I believe that if we achieve these goals, Formula 1 will be in a good position. However, we must ensure that, when the time for implementation comes, we truly deliver a product that meets these goals and objectives.”
When outlining his concerns, Stella argued that the increase in electric power of the new engines would put a lot of pressure on aerodynamics and chassis to compensate. When asked about the goals he believes are difficult to achieve in the current state, Stella explained: “I believe the main challenges are in Article 3, which refers to aerodynamic regulations. Furthermore, I still believe that the way the engines are planned to be used needs to be adjusted. We can still achieve a 50-50 concept, which is a favorable idea, but it can be done in a way that does not place such a heavy burden on the chassis side, which is difficult to meet. Therefore, I think it’s time for all parties to understand that they need to contribute to the success of the sport, both from the engine and chassis perspective.”
Active aerodynamics will consist of two modes: a ‘Z mode’ that generates additional downforce during corners, and an ‘X mode’ that increases the maximum speed on the straight sections of the track.
However, Stella warned that if the 2026 cars continue to adhere to the current regulations established by the FIA, they will be too fast on the straights and too slow in the corners.
“The cars lack speed in the corners and have excessive speed on the straights,” he noted. “Therefore, these two aspects need to be balanced.”
On another note, James Vowles, head of the Williams team, agreed with Fernando Alonso’s assessment that complex power units will make it challenging to achieve the desired weight reduction.
“I would like to add that there are currently two main concerns,” Vowles began. “Firstly, the aerodynamic aspect, which involves the level of freedom and the overall speed of the cars. Secondly, the issue of weight.
“I have already expressed my opinion on this matter, especially from the Williams perspective, but I believe it will be difficult for any team to reach the weight target.
“It is an incredibly challenging task, and I believe it requires further evaluation, as I have dedicated my life to finding marginal gains by reducing the weight of a car.
“Regarding the second concern, I fully agree with my colleagues that we can achieve a satisfactory outcome if we collaborate and address the necessary aspects in the future. We have a solid foundation to build on, but there are certain areas that need clarification.”
Mike Krack, from Aston Martin, also agreed that adjustments need to be made before the regulations are finalized, but emphasized that these discussions should take place privately.
“I believe we still have a long way to go before reaching the final version, and now it is the responsibility of all parties involved to engage in constructive discussions and address any potential issues behind closed doors,” he urged. “I am confident that in the coming weeks and months, through discussions at the Technical Advisory Committee level, we will be able to resolve all remaining concerns.”

However, despite the adversities, sports continue to enchant and inspire us. Athletes show their determination and resilience in every competition, and fans continue to support them unconditionally.
As we bid farewell to this year, we can look back with pride and gratitude for what sports has provided us. And we eagerly await what the next year has in store for us in terms of excitement and sporting achievements.
