Assessing Ocon’s Track Record: A Look at the Controversies and Crashes

Formula 1 Shocker: Driver Receives £14 Million ‘Gift’ After Being Axed by Team

In a jaw-dropping revelation, former Alpine driver Esteban Ocon disclosed that he was handed a £14 million car chassis by his ex-team when they decided to let him go. The unexpected move came as Alpine replaced Ocon with reserve driver Jack Doohan for the final race of the 2024 season and the entirety of 2025. Following a tumultuous end to his tenure with the French-Anglo outfit, Ocon found himself scrambling for a new team, ultimately landing at Haas alongside Oliver Bearman.

The stunning turn of events saw Haas making waves in the current season, sitting pretty in fifth place in the constructors’ championship with 20 points, while Ocon’s former team, Alpine, languishes in ninth place with a mere six points to their name. Adding insult to injury, Ocon recently revealed on the Beyond the Grid podcast that Alpine was compelled to surrender his A521 car to him as per a clause in his contract. This very chassis had propelled Ocon to victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

“It’s not really a gift. It’s a bit more complicated, it was in the contract,” Ocon explained. “So, they were forced to give it! It’s the actual chassis and it’s [the] complete car, it has an engine.” However, Ocon clarified that he is unable to drive the car due to missing components like batteries and ECUs, highlighting the dangers of attempting to operate the vehicle without proper maintenance.

Recent research by Motorsport Magazine unveiled that the cost of building an F1 car amounts to approximately £14.6 million, underscoring the extravagant parting gesture from Alpine to Ocon. Despite his sole grand prix victory at the 2021 Hungarian GP, where he outshone the likes of Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel, Ocon has yet to replicate that success on the F1 circuit. Nevertheless, the Frenchman proudly keeps his A521 from that historic win in his garage back home in France.

The shocking saga of Ocon’s lavish ‘gift’ from Alpine adds a new layer of drama to the already intense world of Formula 1, leaving fans and pundits alike in awe of the unprecedented gesture.
