Formula 1 Unveils New Sprint Weekend Format

In an effort to keep fans engaged and add excitement to race weekends, Formula 1 has announced a new sprint weekend format. The changes include the introduction of a sprint race on Saturday, which will be the first on-track action of the weekend. This sprint race will effectively conclude the sprint element of the weekend, with the grand prix qualifying taking place afterwards. The grand prix itself will still be held on a Sunday.

This marks the third alteration to the sprint format since its implementation four seasons ago. Talks of format changes have been ongoing throughout 2023, and Formula 1 is now ready to roll out the new format for the 2024 season.

The first sprint race of the year will be held at the Chinese Grand Prix, which is returning for the first time since 2019. Additional sprint races will take place at Miami, Austria, Austin, Brazil, and Qatar.

Alongside the changes to the sprint format, Formula 1 has also made adjustments to the activation of the Drag Reduction System (DRS). DRS will now be activated at the end of the first lap, as well as when the race restarts after a safety car period. This change aims to enhance the racing experience and provide more overtaking opportunities.

In addition, the power unit allocation for each driver has been increased from three to four power units per year for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. This change will give teams and drivers more flexibility in managing their power units throughout the season.

Overall, these changes are expected to bring more excitement and unpredictability to Formula 1 race weekends. Fans can look forward to thrilling sprint races and intense grand prix qualifying sessions as the new format takes effect in the upcoming season.
