Franco Colapinto: The Unseen Contender for Red Bull’s F1 Seat

In a shocking twist within the high-octane world of Formula 1, whispers from the paddock suggest that Red Bull principal Christian Horner had his sights set on a surprising candidate for their 2025 lineup. Despite the names Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson being bandied about, it was Argentine sensation Franco Colapinto who reportedly caught Horner’s eye.

The Unexpected Choice: Franco Colapinto

As the dust settled on the 2024 season, Red Bull fans were bracing for a shake-up. With the departure of Sergio Perez, many anticipated Liam Lawson’s promotion from Racing Bulls to the premier team. However, after Lawson’s lackluster performances in Melbourne and Shanghai, where he was unable to score any points, he was swiftly replaced by Yuki Tsunoda. Yet, according to F1 veteran Ralf Schumacher, this wasn’t Horner’s original plan.

Colapinto had made headlines with Williams, securing five points in nine races after stepping in for Logan Sargeant. Despite this promising debut, the Argentine driver found himself without a seat for the 2025 season and instead accepted a role as Alpine’s reserve driver.

Ralf Schumacher reveals that Horner was keen to bring Colapinto into the Red Bull fold, but internal politics played a pivotal role. Red Bull’s senior advisor and driver program overseer, Helmut Marko, preferred to promote drivers from within, namely Lawson or Tsunoda. This internal tug-of-war saw Horner’s plans thwarted, as Dr. Marko’s influence prevailed.

Red Bull’s Tumultuous Start to the Season

The early days of the 2025 season have been a mixed bag for Red Bull. The team currently sits third in the Constructors’ standings with 36 points, largely thanks to the indomitable Max Verstappen. Schumacher commented on the team’s performance, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding their technical direction. “Without Verstappen’s heroics, Red Bull seems adrift,” he noted, pointing to internal disagreements over driver selections as a potential distraction.

Interestingly, Schumacher also mentioned Colapinto’s potential missteps, citing three significant crashes that may have weakened Horner’s case for his inclusion in the team.

The Consequences of Red Bull’s Decision

The decision to swap Lawson for Tsunoda has not been without criticism. Schumacher contends that this move could destabilize Racing Bulls, which had been thriving with the duo of Tsunoda and rookie Isack Hadjar. “It’s unfair to undermine a team that’s been performing well,” Schumacher stated.

As Tsunoda gears up for his Red Bull debut at the iconic Suzuka circuit, fans are eager to see how he will fare alongside Verstappen, a driver known for dominating his teammates. Schumacher warns that stepping into Red Bull’s top seat alongside the reigning four-time World Champion is a daunting task. “Max has molded the car to his liking, making it a formidable challenge for any newcomer,” he observed.

This developing narrative at Red Bull continues to captivate the F1 community, with Colapinto’s near-miss adding another layer of intrigue to the season. As the drama unfolds, all eyes will be on Suzuka, where Tsunoda will face his first test in front of a passionate home crowd.
