The FIA President’s U-turn on curse words? Russell gives the cold shoulder

In a shocking turn of events, the President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, hinted at a possible retreat from the strict ethical code regarding curse words in motorsports, leaving the racing community in a state of disbelief. The controversial code, which resulted in a hefty €10,000 fine for rally driver Adrien Fourmaux for using profanity during a live interview, might be up for revision following feedback from drivers across seven FIA World Championships.

Ben Sulayem, a former rally driver himself, expressed his openness to revising the International Sporting Code of the FIA, stating, “From constructive feedback from the pilots of the seven FIA world championships, I am considering the possibility of making improvements to Appendix B of the International Sporting Code of the FIA.” This unexpected shift comes as a surprise to many, with Ben Sulayem acknowledging the need for a balance between regulations and the essence of the sport, emphasizing the human factor in rule-making.

However, George Russell, the spokesperson for the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), did not hold back his skepticism towards Ben Sulayem’s remarks, labeling them as mere “election promises” until concrete actions are taken. Russell’s icy response reflected the sentiments of many drivers who are eager for tangible changes rather than empty considerations. He emphasized the importance of implementing alterations and ensuring that drivers have a voice in the decision-making process.

As the motorsport world braces for a potential paradigm shift in the enforcement of ethical standards, the rift between regulatory bodies and drivers’ expectations continues to widen. The future of curse words in the adrenaline-fueled realm of racing hangs in the balance, awaiting the outcome of Ben Sulayem’s proposed amendments to the code. Will this signal a new era of leniency, or are we merely witnessing a storm in a teacup? Only time will tell as the motorsport community eagerly anticipates the next chapter in this unfolding saga.
