The FIA has revealed the first image of the Formula 1 car rules for 2026 in a tabloid format. The new rules include the elimination of the drag reduction system and several other changes. The upcoming car will be slightly shorter and narrower, with redesigned aerodynamics to increase efficiency and reduce drag. The goal is to make it easier for cars to follow each other. These modifications are part of an effort to reverse the trend of Formula 1 cars becoming too large in recent years. The drag reduction system will be replaced by active aerodynamics on the front and rear wings, along with an MGU-K override system that will provide additional electrical power for chasing cars to overtake. Changes will also be made to the front wing, sidepods, and floor based on lessons learned from the 2022 rules era. The FIA has dedicated significant time to research and development to improve the wake characteristics of current cars, ensuring that the following car retains more downforce to facilitate tracking. However, the gains achieved by teams in car development since 2022 have diminished these improvements, leading the FIA to address this issue in the 2026 rules. The main goal of the 2026 aero rules package is to restore following car performance. The desire for low drag is not only sustainable in terms of energy and fuel consumption, but also necessary due to the engine characteristics of the 2026 cars, which would result in a significant drop in straight-line speed with current drag levels. The narrower front wing with a unique endplate arrangement aims to eliminate drag, which is when airflow is directed around certain parts of the car, such as the front wheels, to avoid disruptive airflow over the rest of the vehicle. The FIA considers this crucial to improving wake characteristics and facilitating tracking, as drag is detrimental to racing. The introduction of an override function to increase the use of electrical energy by the following car compared to the lead car within a certain distance suggests that overtaking will still be a challenge with the new car profile. The focus on lower drag in the new rules will reduce the vacuum effect, so the combination of the new car and engine regulations aims to emphasize energy management and usage to ensure that overtaking is possible, but not too easy. More details will be shared during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, and the full regulations are expected to be published in June, pending approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council. Finalizing the car rules will determine other important details, such as the use of the new “manual override” system that provides an electrical power boost at high speeds. The availability and limitations of the override function, such as its duration and use per lap or race, have not yet been disclosed. The engine rules have already been established for several years, with the shift from an 80/20 split between internal combustion engine and electrical power to a more balanced 50/50 split being controversial. Red Bull, which is collaborating with Ford to develop its own Formula 1 engine, has been the most vocal opponent of these rules. Critics argue that the increased importance of the hybrid element will lead to unusual tactics and prioritize the V6 engine as a generator to charge the battery, potentially compromising chassis rules. However, the FIA has vehemently denied these claims.
