F1 returns to Portugal in 2027 and 2028: thrilling races await at Portimão!

Formula 1 Roars Back: Portugal’s Grand Prix Returns in 2027 and 2028!

In a thrilling announcement that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport world, Formula 1 officially confirmed the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix to its prestigious calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. This monumental news was unveiled on December 16, by both the FIA and Formula 1 management, along with a supportive nod from the Portuguese Government via the Ministry of Economy.

Portimão Set to Sparkle Again

The stunning Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, located in Portimão, will once again serve as the electrifying backdrop for these two highly anticipated races. Having previously hosted the event in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic, the circuit has proven itself a favorite among fans and drivers alike. Renowned for its challenging layout, Portimão has received glowing reviews, with drivers praising the excitement from the first corner to the last.

Stefano Domenicali, the dynamic president and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his enthusiasm: “I am thrilled to see Portimão back on the F1 calendar, fueling the passion of our amazing Portuguese fans. The circuit delivers excitement from start to finish, and its energy is infectious!”

Financial Windfall for Portugal

The Portuguese government is rolling out the red carpet, with Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro de Almeida, confirming the financial backing for this grand return. The investment is projected to be under 50 million euros, covering the necessary sanction fees and operational costs. But the payoff for Portugal is monumental, with estimated tax revenues soaring to around 140 million euros, fueled by tourism, accommodation, transportation, and all the economic activity that accompanies such a high-profile event.

A Historic Comeback

Portugal had been absent from the Formula 1 calendar for a staggering 24 years, from 1996 until its unexpected return in 2020. The British superstar, Lewis Hamilton, sealed his mark on the Algarve by winning both races held there in 2020 and 2021, establishing a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.

The Estoril Controversy: A Future Uncertain?

While excitement abounds for Portimão, the fate of the Autódromo do Estoril remains ambiguous. Minister Castro de Almeida clarified that discussions with the FIA did not involve Estoril, but indicated potential future talks to optimize its use. Meanwhile, the mayor of Cascais, Nuno Piteira Lopes, has proposed a bold management plan for the Estoril circuit, offering 12.5 million euros for a 75-year lease. His ambitious vision includes a public tender aiming for 150 million euros in private investment, with the hope of bringing Formula 1 back to Estoril as early as 2028. However, significant infrastructure upgrades are vital before that dream can take flight.

Political Triumph and Global Recognition

This monumental announcement was first hinted at by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro during the PSD’s Festa do Pontal in Quarteira, where he declared that plans for the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix were well underway. The official confirmation marks a significant political and sporting victory for the government, promising to elevate Portugal’s international profile and boost its economy. Indeed, this is fantastic news for motorsport fans and enthusiasts, as Portugal cements its status on the global stage for high-octane events.

As the engines rev up for the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix, one thing is clear: the world will be watching as Portugal steps back into the limelight of Formula 1 racing!
