Toto Wolff’s Obsession with Luring Max Verstappen to Mercedes Remains Undeterred Despite Repeated Rejections

Toto Wolff worries about Andrea Kimi Antonelli being exposed to George Russell’s impressive abilities in Formula 1.

Toto Wolff’s pursuit of Max Verstappen has become a lingering saga in the F1 paddock. With the departure of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari for the 2025 season, Mercedes finds itself with a glaring vacancy. Despite Verstappen’s unwavering loyalty to Red Bull, Wolff is not ready to let go of the dream.

The Austrian team principal has been playing the long game, hoping that Red Bull’s recent struggles might tempt Verstappen to reconsider his options. But the reigning world champion has made it abundantly clear that no sum, not even a rumored $250 million, could convince him to leave Milton Keynes.

F1 pundit Tom Clarkson has suggested that a “shadow” of Verstappen continues to haunt Wolff’s mind. The Mercedes boss, despite being repeatedly rebuffed, remains fixated on bringing Verstappen under the Silver Arrows banner. Wolff has publicly expressed that acquiring Verstappen is a move that needs to happen, showing his determination to land the Dutch superstar.

Verstappen, however, has been adamant about his commitment to Red Bull, where his contract runs through the 2028 season. Clarkson believes that Verstappen’s ultimate decision might hinge on how Red Bull’s powertrain performs under the new regulations in 2026 compared to Mercedes’ offerings. This could be the critical factor that influences whether Verstappen stays put or entertains the idea of a move.

As Red Bull grapples with a dip in performance, Mercedes is gradually closing the gap, inching closer to their rivals’ dominance. If Wolff’s relentless pursuit is to bear fruit, Mercedes will need to continue their upward trajectory, offering Verstappen a competitive package that could finally sway him to switch teams.

The saga is far from over, and with Wolff’s persistence, the possibility of Verstappen donning Mercedes colors in the future, however slim, cannot be completely ruled out.
