F1 plans to introduce louder engines by 2030.

F1 planeja introduzir motores mais barulhentos até 2030.

Charles Leclerc, from Monaco, pilots the Ferrari SF-24 at the start of the race on May 5, 2024. This event took place during the Formula 1 World Championship, specifically the Miami Grand Prix in Miami, Florida, USA.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, stated that the series is currently exploring options to increase the excitement of the sport by increasing the noise produced by the engines in 2030.

During the 2000s, Formula 1 was known for its thunderous spectacle, with high-revving V10 engines reaching impressive speeds of over 20,000 rpm.

However, this characteristic was somewhat diminished when V8 engines were introduced in 2006 and was further stifled with the implementation of V6 hybrids in 2014.

An updated version of the V6 hybrids is scheduled to be introduced in 2026. These new power units will have a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric energy, and will produce louder sounds compared to their 2014 counterparts. However, Domenicali is open to exploring additional changes in the future to create an even more thunderous atmosphere.

Domenicali stated: “Once the regulations for 2026 are established, we will start considering what the next steps should be, including the development of the 2030 engine.” He shared this personal consideration with some selected press outlets, including the Italian website Motorsport.com.

He continued: “This is my personal opinion, which has not yet been discussed with the teams. However, I have already talked about it with the FIA. If sustainable fuels prove successful, we will need to carefully evaluate whether we should continue with hybrid technology or if better alternatives will be available.”

The introduction of fully sustainable fuels for the internal combustion component of F1 power units is set to take place in 2026. This advancement raises questions about the need for hybrid systems.

One of the main concerns with hybrid systems is the additional weight they bring. Formula 1 and the FIA are actively working to reduce this weight by 2026.

By transitioning to a fully internal combustion power unit in 2030, Formula 1 could potentially solve the weight issue, while also creating a louder and more exciting spectacle.

Domenicali explained: “If we choose to keep the hybrid power unit solution for 2026, a significant weight increase is inevitable. When comparing a forecast of the 2026 car to one from a decade ago, it becomes clear that weight has become a significant issue.”

He added: “All drivers want lighter cars and, personally, I also believe that a slightly louder sound would be preferable. Currently, we are working to increase the number of decibels produced by the engines. Our research indicates that all markets and age groups desire a more captivating sound, in addition to the energy and vibrations that only a specific type of engine can convey when you are close to the track.”

The future of Formula 1 could potentially involve the return of V8, V10, or even V12 engines, bringing back the thunderous noise that was synonymous with the sport.
